A couple of suggestions:
1) Lower the centre instrument panel, if you haven't already done so.
2) Move the shifter to reverse; this will provide extra room.

Better yet, if you can find it, "stove paint". This is a product for cast iron stoves that use wood as a fuel. I've used it, and it lasts and lasts. When I tried barbeque paint, it turned sort of grey after few months.
