Re: The end for the MOT for vehicles of historic interest

Indeed Andrew....one wonders if it is the thin end of a very unpleasant wedge. I guess only time and incompetent politicians will tell..Equally the classic car industry is apparently worth several billion pounds and they seem ever more popular at shows and charity fund raising events. It would seem...

Re: Headlight earth

Thanks. I found the block connector near to the 8 pin plug. I was looking for it inside the engine bay (doh!) but of course found it by looking through the front mouth of the car. In the end, I found a bad connection on the other side of the car. I replaced the Lucar connector, and now have light ag...

Headlight earth

A thousand apologies if this has been discussed allready. My driver's side main and dip beam doesn't work. Passenger side works fine. Sidelights on both sides are fine, although the driver's side sidelight goes dim when I turn on the dip beam. I've run a new earth to a nearby screw, and everything w...

Re: Gearbox mount (suspected)

Thanks again.

Am I right in saying that there are only two engine mounts? Looking at some of the diagrams, there seems to be what looks like a REAR engine mount?

Re: Gearbox mount (suspected)

Thanks all. Can the gearbox mount be inspected / repaired from underneath the car, or do I need to remove the gearbox cover?

Re: Seat recline broken

Thanks for this. I really need to fix my passenger seat recline mechanism. The problem is, I get so much amusement when I floor the throttle hard, and my passenger collapses backwards into the rear seat. Oh how I laugh.

Gearbox mount (suspected)

I have a horrible noise coming from the gearbox cover when cornering fast. I suspect the gearbox mount needs replacing. Is there a tried and tested method of proving / disproving this, or is it a question of visual inspection?

Thanks

Re: Door locks

Thanks for all your replies - very helpful.

It appears that the plunger mechanism is worn. So I've decided to purchase a new unit...but apparently you can only buy them in pairs!

Anyone want a new passenger handle and barrel assembley?

Door locks

Before I fork out £130 on a new door handle and lock mechanism, I just wanted to check my suspicions that it's the plunger mechanism that is worn? See photo and video. When I press the handle's button, it goes all the way in without opening the door. The spring housing looks fine (I'm aware these we...

Yes, and I have done the same as peter, except that I retained the alloy backing panel on which the number plate is mounted. The key is elimination of the square number plate , which is the really ugly feature. Once you do this, you no longer need the ram's horn exhausts Looks so much better! Presu...

Thanks to West Riding Jaguar

I want to thank the guys at West Riding Jaguar for getting me out of a fix, when my electronic ignition failed at the Donington Historic this month. I was about to have my E-type recovered by the AA from our hotel car park after it refused to start. I called my friend who was over at the track watch...

Jacking by the roadside

Yes I know the subject of jacking has been covered a million times, and I'm happy with my piece of timber under the picture frame (cable-tied in place), but what's the best way to jack up my 2+2 if I have a puncture halfway to the middle of nowhere? What jacks are people keeping in their bootwell fo...

Classic use of the horn! And having a small child standing up on the front seat, holding on to the top of the windscreen! Brilliant.

This year will be my fourth Le Mans Classic, and the second in my E. I have full AA Europe cover including repatriation. Basic spares covering ignition, fan belt, fuses, bulbs etc. Spare coil. Full service three months before going.

Make sure you book in for a track lap!

I've booked with the JEC too. W e're going instead of the Le Mans Classic, just for something different. LMC has still got to be the greatest classic motoring event ever, but I'm keen to see what it will be like. I heard about the marshalling disaster for the E-type 50th, and not looking forward to ...

I've just had my dashboard top off, fixing the map light wiring. From fuse No 8, the wire appears to join the wiring loom, before re-appearing and going to the map light. From the map light, it goes to a connector, and then to the map light switch. The connector on my car is a block connector, which...

Column stalk - dodgy headlamp flasher

I have a rather loose working column switch. The horn and indicators work fine, but the headlamp flasher works sometimes, but not others. Sometimes it wont switch off. And sometimes I've been away from the car, and the headlamps have turned on all by themselves! If I operate the headlamp flasher swi...

I used a very hot hairdryer to bend the length of chrome trim to suit. This worked very well, and also enabled the apature to be opened up slightly, by gently prising it apart with a flat bladed screwdriver. Finally, a squirt of washing up liquid helped to ease the chome over the vinyl.

Thanks Malcolm. No amount or prising will shift it. I can only presume the previous owner was fond of super glue. I've ordered a new ferule and nylon. In the meantime, chrome finishing ring and boot are now in place: http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q13/Heartwood_Bond/HHW%20334G/D1531750-7976-4B0B...
