Re: Gunsons Colortune
I use colourtune, successfully, on my Westfield kit car which has a Weber DCOE 45 setup. My S2 also has a new DCOE setup but I am yet to use colourtune on it as the engine has been freshly rebuilt and is out of the car. When tuning my friends MG with SUs I use two colourtune plugs as the carb feeds ...

IRS top access panel - is it worth having one?
My 1970 S2 2+2 has a butchered panel above the IRS. View from below: https://i.postimg.cc/N0pMKnF5/0-DBA6-A32-8212-468-A-A99-B-7-F2-C21187135.jpg I have a replacement panel that I can either cut to carry out a full repair or turn the repair panel into a removable access panel? It would appear that h...

Re: 4.2 3x45 Webber’s running 12 deg advance?
Choke 32, mains 1.45, f16 tubes, air correction 220. Paul, Do you have the Dyno printout? Ideally with the Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) overlay - always ask for this after a Dyno run. I would suggest that the choke is far too small. Your 32mm choke will cause a significantly richer running from the 145MJ t...

Hi Simon,
I got mine from here:
https://www.thexmod.com/item_detail.asp?id=3328
I’m not affiliated to the company. These are genuine jaguar items for the J60 engine. They fitted my 4.2 engine perfectly! You can’t argue at £25 including VAT too!!

Hi Nick, If it helps I have taken some measurements for you. The drill bit is 6.3mm. I have 6 of these on each side. https://i.postimg.cc/FKYvBzRv/978-DFD4-B-F423-43-B0-959-D-529-F73-D5-F2-BE.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/FKMMCx8b/image.jpg I’ve been playing with the chassis again. A quick update, but firstly thank you for the support on this! So, while plan B is to just replace the floors and rails… I couldn’t help going back to my military roots and seeing what I can do with what I have to hand… with a little yea-ha thrown into the mix! The picture below will explai...

Re: Chassis straightening
Thanks gents. Just finished the first round of cleaning the waxoyl form the car. A little over 6kg of muck in the waste bag! The floors are surprisingly good! Only a small area of rust and damage at the front jacking points, but the B posts will be fun!! The frame rails are almost corrosion free, ju...

Chassis straightening
I’m just starting to strip all the old waxoyl from the chassis as part of the cars restoration. The car is mounted front and rear (at the IRS points) on a rotisserie. The chassis, a S2 2+2, is out of alignment. The chassis stiffener rails are best described as to be sagging. With a straight edge hel...

Re: Tappet Lubrication from cold
Simon, Before you drill your camshafts just keep in mind that if you increase the flow rate out of the camshaft you will reduce the oil pressure in them which could increase bearing wear. What grade of oil are you using? If you’re looking at replacing the cams, change the tappets and cam bearings to...

Re: E-Type Fabs / Classic Fabs Exhaust System Price?
Have you thought about replacing the silencers on your existing system for larger/quieter ones? Could be worth speaking to a custom exhaust shop to see if they could help by modifying what you have as it will probably be cost effective too. Speak to classic fabs?? Alternatively, I have had good resu...

Gearbox to chassis clearance
Hi all, My engine and gearbox are out of the car at the moment whilst the car is going through restoration. Could someone provide me with the distance between the top of the gearbox housing (where the engine rear stabiliser bolts on) to the bottom lip of the firewall above the gearbox. The lip in qu...

Re: Idle speed suddenly too high
I’ve previously found and confirmed an inlet gasket leak by sparingly (small quick squirts) spraying Easy Start around suspect leak areas while the engine is running. The idle will quickly ramp up when you spray it in the area of a vacuum leak.

Smiths digital speedometer
Hi all, For everyone’s awareness. Smiths gauges still have intensions to release a digital version of their Etype speedometer. I spoke with Gavin the MD this week (7 Nov 22) and they’re having supply issues with the processor. The designs are finalised though. It’s a case of just being patient. They...

Re: Bell housing to 4.2 engine block technical drawing
Hi Steve, I would be most grateful if you could do that for me. I’m not sure if you could place the housing on a scanner or photocopier? If it’s copied in sections I could then stitch the images together, in an ‘actual size’ resolution, and work from the template to build a model in CAD. Once I have...

Bell housing to 4.2 engine block technical drawing
Hi all.
Does anyone have a technical drawing of the bolt pattern that mates the gearbox bell housing to the 4.2 engine block?
I’m hoping someone can save me a few hours of work as I’ll have to split my setup to take the measurements.
Thank you in advance.

Re: IRS rebuild required, can anyone recommend a UK specialist in south of England?
Hi Kevin, I have not used this garage but they were recommended to me when I started my Etype rebuild project (for if I got stuck or gave up). They’re in Portsmouth. https://www.classicsbyjswl.co.uk/ I’m currently restoring my IRS at the moment and doing a vented disc conversion. I’m the best part o...

Re: Matching engine number important?
I’m with Steve on this, I don’t think it makes a difference in the uk. Just make sure it’s on the V5. In my case, the original engine was missing, long story. The car came with a donor XJ6 S1 engine but the block was beyond saving - cracked and the studs had rotted out completely (3 sheared when rem...
