Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hello Tom, I believe there is also another difference between our two versions. With crank pulley marked at 10 BTDC, then the strobe will be correct at the 0 position. But with the mark set at 0 BTDC, then the strobe will be correct at the 10 position. This is assuming you have the strobe with the r...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hello Tom, sorry to sound so stupid, but just want to confirm if my numbers come to the same answer as you but by a different route ? To summarise your setting below, then followed by mine. Distributor set 10 BTDC 0 in the curve at idle on app “Static advance” 10 BTDC “ include static advance” butto...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hello Tom, I have looked at my Bluetooth 123 and agree with you, it appears to have this update. I wonder if this is because of my calls and emails to them in Holland. But, I have read the wording when you touch the orange circle exclamation mark on the curve page when you edit a setting and find it...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Steve, yes I was aware of the fact that many prewar cars are started with the lever in retard then advanced once running and driving. I wonder where the retard takes the timing to is it TDC or even before or after ? I have never heard of anyone saying what the degrees are ? Or even how advanced in f...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hello Tom and all, I have been away for a week, so late reply. I have had various emails back and forth with 123 office in Holland. Contrary to comments they said to me some years ago, now they are saying it is better to set the system to start at the position of 10 degrees BTDC. But, that does mean...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Tom, how do know on the pre programmed version the advance curve is too low as you stated. I thought it only gave a few set positions, like idle and max advance. Have you tried all the positions on the pre programmed version as an experiment? Tomorrow, I will contact 123 in Holland and ask them if t...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Tom, I assume your engine is tuned up, as the reason you have decided to use Weber’s instead of SU’s ? Surely the only reason to use Weber’s is for more power, combined with other tuning mods. Also they use more fuel. I don’t think I ever see a Weber equipped car idling at 500rpm. Normally more like...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Tom, I have tried it both ways. Setting it at TDC and programming app to start at 10, also as you suggested, setting at 10 BTDC then lower curves. I cannot see any difference in the starting, it seems the same when I have tried both. But interestingly the 123 instructions say set at 10 BTDC, but whe...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Two years later ! I just wanted to say that I have been using a curve very similar to to Rory’s hard work converting the figures to Absolute on the vacuum curve for the Bluetooth 123 system. Although my car is not either a 3.8 or 4.2 E type, but an XK120FHC with a slightly tuned engine - higher lift...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Did anyone ever come to a conclusion about the comments from Rory about manifold or ported vacuum ?
I have tried sending a PM but no answer. I would be very interested to hear a conclusion for programming the vacuum setting on my 123 Bluetooth version.

Re: Setting tickover with different camshafts - JAG4 from Guy Broad

Chris, but on his website the other cams all add up and make sense except this one. Surely they are all described the same way as they are all made by Kent Cams for him. I called Kent Cams and they would not answer my question.

Re: Setting tickover with different camshafts - JAG4 from Guy Broad

When I bought my XK120, it had D type cams previously supplied by I believe Guy Broad from the paperwork. I could not get the car to tick over properly. The cams were taken out and I took them to Newman, for inspection. He put them on his machine measured and polished them. His comment was they were...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hello Chris, I think your post crossed with mine when I was typing it. When I raised the revs to 3000 I never realised I was meant to see such a high advance number, as your post saying over 50 degrees. I just saw a much higher than anticipated constant advance degree and backed off. Yes, I was doin...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hi Steve and Tom, Firstly, yes the TDC mark is correct. It has been check more than once with a dial gauge. The engine is correctly set statically at 10 BTDC. I used the timing gun and it produced the numbers I came up with. I took the car for a short drive on the flat and up and down a hill. It fel...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Ok, so sunny day, took my shopping bag with me - The curves that I had set on post number 90, I tried this afternoon. No good !! Don’t know why as although they are at the top of the parameters from the manual on post 65 and Chris’s calculations from inches to kpa’s on post 78. The revs at 3000 went...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hello Chris, the 6000 limit does not matter as I never rev the engine anywhere near that. It is just the way the graph shows maximums. Hello Steve, Yes I will check with the strobe light. I have also programmed on another page of the 123, the bottom end of both the crankshaft advance and bottom end ...

This is based on the static at 10 BTDC. What are the opinions ? I am n...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Hello Chris, if I am driving at 70mph in my car in 4th gear it equates to about 3,000 rpm, but if I put it into O/D 5th gear it is doing about 2,400 rpm. What is worrying me now is that my throttle opening in the 5th gear is a lot less than in 4th gear, so does this mean it is likely to ‘Pink’ ? The...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Just a couple more comments. The vacuum on the 123 is not a real vacuum canister, just I believe a micro switch, so I wonder if the standard default MAP curve on my picture on post 70 is just a simple way it works as a switch as it is all straight lines ? Whereas the real version has curves. Also, t...

Re: pre-programmed curves on 123 ignition - help please?

Andrew, like you I am pretty disappointed by the responses from 123 in Holland. On my Healey 100 I have distributor make by CSI. They are a breakaway team from 123 in Holland who produce a similar item and now have launched a fully programmable system like the 123 Bluetooth. I have the old simple ve...
