Re: 3.8 Engine Damper Alternatives
I would be very wary of substituting the later large mass damper for the earlier dinner plate type one. You do not want a fractured crankshaft

Re: Building a Merlin engine.
Geoff; I have indeed read Hooker's wonderful book several times. I could be wrong but I think that his and Sayer's paths might well have crossed when both were at Bristol Siddeley and before Sayer went to , was it Baghdad?

Re: Building a Merlin engine.
Geoff : I think that Jaguar abandoned the split pins because of numerous instances of them breaking off , getting into the oil pump and being shredded and then fragments going through the bearings with disastrous consequences PS you might be interested to know that the Ford Trafford Park Merlin plan...

Re: Routing of Front Wiring Harness Engine Bay - experiences of others ?
Rory : the way mine was done originally, and the ( same) way I adopted on my rebuild, was the way you have done yours i.e. around the top rail positioned on the rail's underside, and I cannot recall having seen it done in any other way except that one car positioned the harness on the inside of the ...

Re: Needles for SU carb conversion
Going back to the needle problem, I see that both the alternatives you tried are marginally weaker at bottom to mid-range than BBG, but very much weaker at the top . I do wonder whether perhaps you have the wrong springs in. The correct one according to the SU complete catalogue is AUC 1167 which ha...

Re: Needles for SU carb conversion
Perhaps if you tell us what the needles are, we may be able to give a better idea of what may be wrong. The letter code is etched on the shank about half way down the shank of the needle. Also, are they correctly mounted in the piston? The shoulder should be flush with the base of the piston . It oc...

Re: Needles for SU carb conversion
I am not surprised about your results. The AFR is supposed to be set at idle . An AFR of , say ,13.5 :1 will give an idle CO of perhaps 5%. The needles are so constructed that from that point up to a cruise setting , say 2500rpm at about a one-quarter throttle opening, a CO reading of perhaps 1% CO,...

Re: JDC JEC or E-type club
I have been a JEC member for about 30 years, and until recently it was very good. Just recently, however, Graham Searle who was the General Manager, , died, and the very long standing ( and hugely knowledgeable). editor Nigel Thorley stood down, to be replaced by a very opinionated replacement who f...

Re: The end of older car insurance?
Whoever drafted this knows little, if anything, about the law of contract, at any rate in common law countries. An insurance contract is neither more than less than that, a contract, and its terms are settled at the date that the contract is made. Its terms do not alter as you drive along ; so , if ...

A lot of the early cars were bought by returning US servicemen and not registered until they were ready to use them, usually for European trips

Re: 3.8 Moss gearbox swap to a 4.2 Synchro box
James : you can get into all kinds of difficulty if you attempt this. The problem lies in the fact that the 3.8 and the 4.2 have different sized flywheels and starter motors and AFAIK these have to be fitted in matched sets. I suggest you research the archives on this board which will give you an id...

Re: Smart chargers
Malcolm : no the CTek will revive almost anything, but its circuitry requires if to encounter a residual voltage of 2 volts . If your car is gradually discharging the battery ( immobilisers are one of the prime sources of this ) - Both my Bentley Continental R and my Mercedes CLK do it - it will eas...

Re: Smart chargers
<alcolm : one point anyone trying to charge a very flat battery with a CTek needs to know is that they will not charge if the battery voltage is below 2 volts . So, if that situation arises, you need to connect a normal charger to the battery to bring the voltage up . IIRC, you can connect an ordina...

Re: Fast Road camshaft conundrum!
Unfortunately, unless my memory is leading me astray I have experience of these camshafts on a Series 1 4.2 ( not my car) and they were a disaster, digging a terrible hole in the torque curve at around 2250 - 2500 rpm . It was all some years ago so I will make a few calls tomorrow to refresh my memo...

Re: Brakes slow in releasing
I should also have said that with a newly rebuilt system a lack of lubrication of the rubbers can be the problem. A counter to this is to dissolve an ounce or two of red rubber grease in brake fluid and thoroughly flush the system i.e. re-bleed it using the by now reddened fluid

Tim : just buy a single shouldered stud ( it is a different part no from the rest ) and place it in the no 2 position ( i.e 2nd from front ) on the left side . They are not very expensive
