Re: scuttle casing assembly under the dash

My very early 4.2 FHC had the alloy underdash panels, and they were fairly crude as I recall.

Re: anti theft devices

I had a battery cutoff with removable key on my '65, along with a hidden switch for the fuel pump. I would sometimes remove the distributor rotor, and run a length of heavy chain through the left-front wheel and lower A-arm. You can't prevent a really determined thief, but the other 99.9% want thing...

Re: Stainless Exhaust Manifold

I'm with David on this one. The factory manifolds were very well thought out by Jaguar. Early in my E-Type "career," I had a set of no-name mild-steel tubular manifolds on my early 4.2 FHC. The mid-range torque suffered, while the top end remained pretty much unchanged. I never did bother having my ...

Re: New engine mounts

Having the throttle go full open after the carburettor linkage fouls the upper frame rail is a life-changing experience. The front engine mounts were part of the problem, but a previous owner had also ignored the condition of the rear mount (the bobbin was missing) and had backed off the adjustment ...

Re: Cooling fan switch

Personally, I wouldn't be bothered by the fan coming on at 80C/176F and turning off at 70C/158F. This is keeping the engine temp in a good place and nowhere near running too warm. Since the original Otter switches were notorious for failing, I always felt lucky that mine tended to turn the fan on at...

Re: Best type of exterior mirrors

I had a single Talbot bullet mirror attached as far back as possible on the bonnet. It was almost totally useless, but met the letter of the law in California--and it looked cool. A door mirror would have made more sense. I've seen a number of E-Types with mirrors fitted to the scuttle, and I don't ...

Re: Nuts & Bolts

For really high-quality fasteners, check with Aircraft Spruce & Specialty. AN (aircraft)-grade fasteners are SAE UNF threads and the quality is superb. I prefer to use AN-grade hardware in critical applications. Surprisingly, prices aren't too far beyond the hardware-store stuff. ACS is based in Cal...

Welcome to my world. I did this once with a newly rebuilt (and installed) engine. After pulling the cylinder head, I installed Helicoil inserts and never had another problem.

Re: Am I overheating?

The Coolcat fan moves a lot of air, so I think your problem lies elsewhere. My guess is that you have a thermostat that isn't opening all the way.

Re: Impact noise on each bump

The sources of mystery clunks and rattles in E-Types are many and can be really frustrating to track down. I always look for the obvious first, such as perished rubber bits and witness marks on adjacent components, but the one that drove me nuts with my first E-Type many years ago was a surprise. Th...

Re: Early Browns Lane Cars

Probably the most sensible approach to this issue. It's a shame that California and so many other states have always been fixated on having an actual plate up front.

Re: U-Joints, Drive shaft and Half shafts replacement

If the half-shaft U-joints have gone, bear in mind that this is your upper suspension link. When mine failed, I didn't have any symptoms but instead found the problem when I jacked the car up and was just wiggling everything (on the car, not me...) as part of my routine maintenance, when a couple of...

Re: Newspaper report E type in crash

Not good. I hope all injured parties make a full recovery. Incidents such as this are not good for the vintage-car hobby. Politicians in the U.S. are starting to make noise about requiring owners to retrofit their cars with modern safety equipment or park them. I'm sure legislators around the globe ...

Re: Brake Fluid Change

I still use Castrol GTLMA DOT 4 fluid and change it annually. I did mess about with DOT 5 silicone-based fluid, and found bleeding the brakes difficult due to the air suspended in it. Other owners may have had better experiences, but that was mine. Start the bleeding process from the caliper farthes...

Re: Steering Wheel

I'm a semi-skinny six feet, with long legs, and a 15" Moto Lita was a good compromise. Getting in and out wasn't a problem with the original wheel, but driving long distances with the wheel against my thighs became tiresome. I also ran 185-15 skins, so steering at low speeds was as light as it was g...

Re: Crankcase ventilation adequate?

My '65 FHC had the breather with the vertical cylinder and small outlet, and it was totally inadequate. I modified the breather assembly from an earlier car, giving the breather outlet an ID of 1.00" and this worked well. I just let the fumes dump out under the car.

Re: Tyre advise

Here's one more vote for the 185-15. You'll find that the car just feels "right" with the original skins. Back in the '80s, the 185-15 was difficult to source in the U.S., and I experimented with various tire sizes. The one that fit on the stock wheels without rubbing on anything was the 205/75-15. ...
