2+2 gearbox tailshaft housing

Hoping somebody can give me some advice regarding removal of the tailshaft housing at the back of the gearbox on a Series 1 2+2 please. Undoing the bolts will loosen the casting but despite gentle persuasion with a mallet and some more persuasive use of tyre levers the unit will not separate from th...

Re: Its been a while...

Hi Chris,

Welcome back! I too have been absent for a couple of years until recently from all things Jaguar as remarried / moved house (twice) and moved my E type more times than I care to remember  Pleased you are still enjoying your wonderful restoration.

Good to hear you’re still about.

Hi Dana,

Just read this thread from start to finish as been away from the forum for far too long. A stunning car and a real credit to your enthusiasm that comes across in the post. Enjoy. :swerve:

Re: First problem.. Series 1 advice sought please

If you have a leak in either the master or slave you probably have a load of air in the system by now. I would try the simple things first, fix the leak and bleed the system through.

My brother, who has on occasion been prone to acting on impulse brought a 19 year old Russian over here, married her so she could get her visa and promptly got her up the duff. She then left him for another bloke (that was really unforeseen), so being the lucky bloke he is has ended up with both 288...

Andrew, For my two penneth worth I think you should paint and trim a car in any colour you like, after all it's your vehicle and you have to look at it and drive it. My 2+2 was originally painted Dark Blue, non metallic with beige interior. When I bought it, it had been changed to red with a red int...

I tried different size sockets with the propshaft on the garage floor and hit it with an engineering hammer after soaking the bearing cups in penetrating fluid for a couple of days. Nothing, refused to budge. Upgraded to a club hammer, still no joy. Finally resorted to the biggest lump hammer and to...

I left the spindles on mine, pulled the entire assembly into the void behind the bulkhead and fed it all the way along to one side. When you can go no further it is possible with a lot of juggling to withdraw the mechanism through one of the holes in the void. It helps to have small hands, you will ...

Nice looking car Graham, they still look fabulous in primrose too.

Like you, I have a 2+2, albeit somewhat earlier and in about a thousand pieces at present, but am enjoying the challenges of restoration :)

2+2 gearbox assistance

All, I have whilst the gearbox has been apart, replaced the front oil seal and paper gasket between the box and bell housing. I now need to do the same with the rear. I have undone the bolts between the extension casting (fitted to the 2+2 & S3 only), removed the speedo drive, the split pin, castell...

So to those who are getting upset and obsessed with values, or are just not enjoying their E types to the full, sell up and re-discover cheap fun motoring (as E Types were in the 1970s / 80s). There is a raft of stunning cars from the 90s onwards that are on the floor price-wise, and with a bit of ...

With POR 15, you are supposed to brush off all flaky rust first. My understanding is that then, when painted, there is no further rusting that takes place under the paint. You don't need to use special primers or treatments first, unless you are painting on shiny new metal. It is true that you cann...
