Re: Replacing bottom wishbone

It was a pain but have replaced both radius arms and everything back together. Not the easiest job which was a surprise as it seemed straight forward. Yes, my car is on eBay - I have a restorer lined up if it doesn’t sell who will be sorting all of the body issues. It’s just a question of whether I ...

Replacing bottom wishbone

I had to remove the lower rear wishbone after having to cut the radius arm bolt which was seized in. Just wondering if there are any tips in replacing it? I will remove the lower plate and somehow keep the hub out of the way and have already greased it all up and put a dowel in both sides to keep th...

Re: Wiring questions

My thanks Steve, this worked perfectly and the car started for the first time since I got it using the key. Previously there was an isolator key and a separate switch to enable the coil. Now I need to get the dash in which is straight forward other than the pesky choke cables / mechanism which my bi...

Re: Wiring questions

Getting further, I have attached the earth wire to the stalk using a small self tapper and now the horn works. A little adjustment of the wires to the dip/main switch and now all lights and indicators are working so definite progress. Still won’t start and no spark. I have been reading up and it loo...

Wiring questions

More wiring questions I'm afraid, hopefully these last few will get the car up and running. 1. In the middle instrument panel there are a load of earth wires mainly for the panel lighting. Do these all go together and do they attach to a specific place or places. I have loads of photos but neglected...

Re: Lighting switches questions

Thanks all, a bit of investigation revealed one switch was the 'correct' way around but the other was reversed. Turns out easy job to just take the cap off and turn it around. I have also replaced the original air filter as although its hideous it does retain the breather. I'll look around for anoth...

Re: Lighting switches questions

Thought so - the issue is these are new switches from SNGB and I am testing with a multi-meter initially. They only switch and connect the circuit when the 'white square' is in, not when it is out. I really don't want to have to dis-mantle the switch to reverse the rocker part...

Series 2 OTS Header Tank positioning and breather questions

Apologies for the stupid questions but here goes. I have worked through my conversion to RHD but have a couple of issues to resolve. Firstly, I currently have a small radiator header tank mounted on the Left hand side of the bulkhead next to the heater box. I also need to mount the washer bottle and...

Lighting switches questions

Back on my rebuild of my series 2 DHC and on to some electrics. I have an odd issue with the 2 lighting switches. I would assume that the white 'square' on the switches should face up and should be visible when the switch is on however mine seem to be the opposite way around in that with the square ...

Bonnet electrical plug

As part of my RHD conversion I have decided to replace not only the dash wiring harness but also the engine wiring harness as this connects to the dash one inside. The only issue I have found (so far) is the wiring for the multi-way plug connecting to the bonnet. The harness from SNGB has 6 wires wh...

Re: Radius Arm Mounts and other concerns!

Thanks Steve, did that with the near side one but I can’t get in well enough on the right. I’ll ask my son to take a look as his hands are a lot smaller than mine! Had a good couple of hours on electrics tonight and making good progress. Just need to extend the main brown live over to the right as t...

Re: Radius Arm Mounts and other concerns!

I think you are both correct. Having thought a little more I have decided I will finish off what I can, that is the rhd conversion and then take the car or more likely have it transported to someone who knows a lot more than I do to have it checked out further. I know it isn’t ever going to be a sho...

Radius Arm Mounts and other concerns!

I'm probably opening myself up to some stick but here goes. As I have mentioned before, on a whim I bought what looked like a cheap S2 OTS at the end of last summer. I did a couple of short test drives enough to convince me that I really wanted to convert to RHD. I've started the project and the con...

Re: Valve clearances and RHD conversion

Ok - making some progress and have the pedal box modified and installed and the new accelerator pedal in also. Not plumbed the brakes or clutch in yet - clutch looks easy enough but the brakes are confusing but I will get to the vacuum pipes next... I am staying for now with the twin Stromberg carbu...

Re: Valve clearances and RHD conversion

The RHD conversion kit has arrived and I have started in earnest. Its quite daunting to have the entire dash out knowing that I have to fit a new wiring loom at the same time as trying to sort out all of the wiring 'mods' done by previous owners but at least I'm hoping that once done the key will be...

Re: Valve clearances and RHD conversion

Well certainly not as difficult as I made out - valve clearances adjusted now, I have left them slightly slack as I prefer them a bit on the loose side so inlets were 5-6 thou and exhausts 7-8 thou. Engine is much quieter now but I also adjusted the timing chain so that probably helped. I may be ima...

Re: Valve clearances and RHD conversion

Cheers Steve, have read all of that article and doesn't sound too bad however the carbs do appear to be an issue. I have been watching eBay and found the following https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204136929678 I understand however that the manifold for the E-Type is specific to it and the Mk X version won...

Re: Valve clearances and RHD conversion

Been speaking with a local E Type specialist just outside Sheffield who has given me a bit of advice in the past and he has mentioned I need to check on the availability of a throttle linkage for the RHD as I have the twin Stromberg carbs. Anyone got any experience of converting a car with these car...

Valve clearances and RHD conversion

A couple more questions please as I get back down to looking at my E Type I have ordered all of the shims etc to set the clearances correctly (well hopefully) but I did wonder if there is a clear guide of the process of doing the valve clearances including such things as re-setting the timing chain ...

Re: 'Ticking' engine

Well cams are out after many attempts to remove the correct cam bolt so leaving the one I could access when the engine was at TDC! No idea why it took me 3 attempts to get that right! I've measured the existing shims and will order new replacements today. I would welcome advice on torque settings ho...
