Re: Suitable gear box oil for my 2+2 overdrive unit
Hi All OK from the horse's mouth that is Guy at https://www.classic-oils.net First recommendation is Redline MT90-drain as normal-no problem with some old left in the hard to drain places and put in the MT90 (his book says approx 1.7ltr for box and o/d). If you want to stay mineral then Millers EP80...

Re: Suitable gear box oil for my 2+2 overdrive unit
Hi All Very interesting and thanks for feedback. I at last know exactly which gearbox I have(Jag all synchro) because of the reverse(next to 2nd!) I have a call in to Classic Oils in Bicester who apparently are the 'folks that know'. I will get back when I've talked with them and probably add more c...

Re: Suitable gear box oil for my 2+2 overdrive unit
OK I always assumed it was a Moss from an early XJ6- at least that was what Peter Crespin said it was.As to synchro it certainly feels that way. The Compact A Type is the only one that fits directly onto the 2+2 box without alteration again as I was told.
Should I doubt any of this?

Re: Suitable gear box oil for my 2+2 overdrive unit
Thanks Guys, appreciate the comments. Blimey this is a big subject with so many opinions. As far as I can find out the Laycock compact A Type does not like EP90 which appears to be the recommended oil for the Moss. Obviously MT90 was not around at the time so could not be recommended. It also appears...

Suitable gear box oil for my 2+2 overdrive unit
Hi everyone. I reckon David will come back on this as I have read many of his posts on this. Specifically I have in my car an overdrive unit(and greetings to Peter Crespin the supplier-how is the US of A?) which is getting very sluggish on the change. I am sure a new oil change would help but which ...

Hi Chris(and all of course) Thanks first of all and you have, I think, highlighted the problem. My car is a series 1 4.2 2+2 1966. The switch fitted at the moment appears to be(don't want to get it out yet until I am sure of all this) an in line arrangement with two double spades identical to a Luca...

Problem with a live ignition without key.
I have just replaced my alternator with a modern one because of failing bearings and had a weak ignition warning light on permanently(this I now know to be the 3AW relay). I now have a live ignition switch and can start the engine without ignition on so I think there was a problem waiting to emerge....

Front Side Frames
Hi All I have discovered some small stress cracks at some joints on my offside Side Frame (1966 Series1) I know there are specific no-no's on this but can someone define the repair position on this one. No welding I understand but why? Is TIG allowed and if so what are the rules. I did try the searc...

Hi Dave Nice to know you are still ticking. Firstly Blockley(Northwick Park ind estate),maybe surprisingly, is a hotbed of classic motor racing and engineering both in cars and bikes and particularly in Jag xk's and Austin Healeys. New brake kits
Hi Everyone As promised an update on the new kid on the block, Fosseway Performance Brake kit. I have just fitted their front brake upgrade and I opted for vented discs with silver caliper finish. The delivery was swift and well presented and the quality of the kit is outstanding...the braided hose ...

Ooooo...below the belt but tend to agree. Can't quite see Peter weilding something as delicate as a 1/4 "brush!
Afraid to admit that I used masking tape.

o/d gearbox
Just seen this thread and thought I would throw in my twopennyworth. Peter sold me an xj o/d just before he deserted these shores. I was persuaded by both Peter and David that it was the best route and so it was. A bugger to fit(engine out job) but so worth it. Just been on a long trip to Italy and ...

Thanks for reply guys and yes I was considering the Coopercraft as well and I was also concerned with the calipers sticking out like a sore thumb. One of my concerns though is do I have to change the rear brakes to match the performance? I am though going to go for this outfit Fosseway Performance a...

New Brake Kits
Hi Everyone I've just come back from a great trip over the Alps only marred by some fading brakes(scary) so time for an upgrade. I have seen the existing list but, having just visited Silverstone Classic show, I came across a stand called Fosseway Performance(WWW.fossewayperformance.co.uk) with a fu...
Thanks for replies. I know about Dudley but wanted something a bit closer to home and Marquersore seem to have it on the nose and no splitting necessary!!-luckily I've only machined off the welds prior to splitting so re mating the parts not now a problem. Trouble is they are not answering e-mail or...

Hi guys Sorry but just to carry on a little with this thread, I am a 'Fat Mat' man(not physically of course) and have found a big difference in both sound and heat insulation- I guess its all down to individual preference and interpretation. What has got my attention though is the oily sponge which ...

Hi Pete I assume you are not joking about the theft. Not good and I am sorry. Have to say though officer I cannot remember aforsaid cars but I do admit to a bad memory-all I remember was a scruffy barn with lots of 'dodgy stuff' ready for the boat. (pit pony eh! )--by the way, just refurbished those...
