Re: Over torqued head nuts

Are the head studs new or used? My (entirely uneducated) view would be that if the studs were new I think they're fine to use. If used I'd replace them. I would also guess that the head gasket is also fine, but given the relative ease of replacing it now rather than after it leaks I'd replace it now...

This is the picture from the Service manual dealing with adjustment of the kickdown cable.

It might give you some idea of how it's mounted.

At a guess, it looks like it might mount on the rearmost lower inlet manifold stud...

Re: Overflowing Fuel

It's probably the needle stuck in the seat.

Before you pull it apart try tapping the top of the float bowl firmly. This may dislodge the needle.

Re: Engine Number Series 3 Roadster RH

I suspect that's original even though it is really poorly done. The reason I think it's original is that when I bought my XJS the inspectors didn't believe the engine number was original because it was so badly stamped; just like yours. They were so convinced it was faked that they impounded my car ...

Re: Tappet Guide Hold Downs?

We would always install them during a head/engine rebuild. You could install them with the engine in situ, but as you say there's a lot of drilling and swarf and IMO the risks probably outweigh the benefits. Although movement of the guides is a recognised problem, I have personally not heard of one ...

Re: No spark

No spark. Symptom: car won’t start or run at all. NOTE: assumes NEGATIVE earth, points in distributor. To Confirm: Put a plug tester in series with a plug. It should flash when engine is cranked. If no flash check other plug leads as well. No flash = no spark. If you do have a flash the problem is N...

Re: 3sp auto to 4sp auto conversion?

No experience, but I do know that Dellow make conversion bell housings for the V12 engine.

They can apparently make you a bell housing to suit a range of automatic transmissions.

Re: Complete interior

One of my E types has had a full ground up resto but we reused the original interior, with new carpets and careful repairs.

It looks great. The patina adds to the car, rather than detracting from it.

I prefer it to my 2 other cars with brand new interiors.

Re: Jet centring method

Dull thud is fine. That's how I'd describe the noise.

The piston needs to fall unimpeded and hit the bridge.

I do it with the spring out as well.

Re: Gunsons Colortune

I've had the same experience as Chris.

Whether it was because I didn't know what I was doing or not I didn't find it helpful to tune my cars.

I do have a Gunson 4125 CO meter. This is an excellent aid to tuning, especially with triple carb setups.

Re: Steering arm

There are shims C27177/x shown in the Parts Manual, but I'm pretty sure these are for centering the brake caliper.

I'm not sure if I've seen shims fitted between the steering arm and the stub axle, but I only have experience with S1 and S2 cars.

Re: Accelerator housing/Brake-clutch housing assembly/installation (LHD)

They're usually pretty level. As you say the accelerator is a bit lower but that is adjustable. You don't want it too low though. After some modifications the accelerator pedal on my MK 2 was maybe 1" lower than the brake. When sliding my foot across to the brake it would catch on the side of the pe...

Re: Accelerator housing/Brake-clutch housing assembly/installation (LHD)

You should be able to assemble the whole thing minus the pedal pads and install it from above. You can adjust the splined brake pedal with the assembly installed by undoing the pinch bolt and opening the splines with a big screwdriver or a chisel while lying in the footwell. From (distant) memory, t...
