Hi John (JEP41)

Could you check your spam filter as I sent you a couple of PMs earlier in the week and they're still in my outbox, so that tells me you haven't seen them.

Many thanks.

Sorry to everyone else, but Jobn hasn't given us the ability to email him so I can only contact him this way.

Hi Clive, One of the reasons I decided to rebuild the original engine in my 3.8 was because the one that was in the car was using a pint of oil after approximately 150 - 200 miles. Some was leaking out but most was being burnt. I'm relieved to say that after 750 miles running-in the new engine, I ca...

Hi David, Thanks for your latest post - it made me go and look at the ring gear on both flywheels. As a consequence, I think I've finally got to the bottom of this conundrum! Both flywheels have the ring teeth machined into them, so I guess this means there's a good chance of them being original. Gi...

Two part reply here: Firstly, Kingzetts, I removed my Getrag gearbox from the engine today and then removed the clutch and flywheel. I already knew the clutch was 10" spring so I can now tell you that the friction plate measures 9.875" outside diameter and 6.75" inside - as you hoped yours would, I ...

Favoured timing chain manufacturers

Are there any favoured timing chain and hydraulic tensioner manufacturers for the XK engine, and conversely any to avoid? I am about to replace mine and am minded of the many discussions on this very topic in the Triumph Stag world (yes I have one of those as well). The chains in the Stag are not du...

Christopher, Mark and David, thanks to you all for your helpful comments. I will now definitely not be changing to a 4.2 flywheel but will have a look at the one on my current engine (which I removed this afternoon) and all being well, will have it drilled to take the 9.5" clutch. If SHMBO permits i...

Thanks to you all for your valuable input - as ever. One or two comments have given me something to think about. Firstly, I cannot find the part number on the flywheel David, but if the flywheel has been lightened then maybe it got shaved off. The engine number is stamped on there though, so it is d...

Has my flywheel been lightened?

I'm in the process of rebuilding my original 3.8 engine and eventually I'll swap it for the one that's currently in the car. I'm also contemplating going to the 9.5" diaphragm clutch which will necessitate the flywheel being drilled to take it. However, I was reading an earlier thread on lightened f...

Thanks for the help fellas, but please don't get hung up on whether VSE have stopped doing part-builds - my question is only about parts. By the way David, I tried to call them this morning but it went through to an answering machine. Will try again on Monday. And also thanks for your reply to my PM...

3.8 engine rebuild - pistons and rings

I've sent my spare block off to be assessed and rebored as necessary, with the intention of rebuilding it myself, in order to keep the costs down. However, as I'm new to Jaguars (and engine rebuilding!) I've had to do a fair bit of research on the internet and also using various suppliers' catalogue...

I'm thinking of maybe replacing my Getrag 265 and am keen to know your thoughts on the E-Type Fabs gearbox. Three of you ventured to suggest that you might have tried it by now. Harry, 'Stradman' and David (Heuer), have you had chance to try the box and if so what are your thoughts?

cheers
