Re: 130A alternator upgrade

What is a "safe" amp output alternator to run in a S1 wire loom. I'm about to convert to a GM 10si with either 65 or 85 amps with internal regulator. This is really a question for the Series 1 forum, but I installed a 55A alternator to a friend's 68 S1 and its working fine. Again, that does not mea...

Re: Has Anyone Fitted the Tremac 5 Speed ?

These gearboxes (in their later iterations since the '90's) are designed to run automatic transmission fluid (yes really). Thank you Steve I'm aware of the need for the Tremec to run an ATF based oil. I did receive instructions that said so. The manual transmission on my Land Rover Discovery 1 and ...

Re: Has Anyone Fitted the Tremac 5 Speed ?

I have a Tremec TKO500 in my '80 XJS with a 0.68 5th and 3.07 diff. It cruises at 120km/h (75mph) at around 1960 rpm .... and I wish for another gear! 1500 at 120 would be lovely.... The Tremec is rather noisy in 1,2 and 3rd, does not shift easily. I find that if I shift at very low rpm (not more 15...

Re: Which connector is this?

Looks good!

Suggestion : apply power to fans (high speed) and check what happens to the flaps. Consider that in the car, the flaps will be much more flexible at operating temp.

I've a question on the rubber flaps. What about the thickess? I do have a rubber plate to be cut but it is a 3mm and it sounds to me a bit too thick.
The flaps on my car is 1.5mm thick. 3mm would be too thick.

Re: Battery Voltage Gauge

Here are a series of pics that my Battery Gauge displayed on the bench with voltages applied directly to the gauge terminals and verified with my Fluke multimeter (ON the gauge terminals):

Re: Battery Voltage Gauge

I upgraded my Butec alternator to a modern ex LR unit because I trusted low readings from the Battery gauge... Big mistake. Trusting the gauge, that is. In the end, I need not have upgraded the alternator at all, had I known about the issues around the Battery gauge (which was calibrated correctly a...

SO why are people fitting an alternator capable of supplying an extra 60 plus amps?
As stated in post #1, its NOT about the 130A. It IS about the form factor and ease of installation.

I'm not ENCOURAGING anyone to install this alternator. I merely share what I did and WHY.

Re: 130A alternator upgrade

:banghead: I may still replace the original Butec.... Having corrected the reasons for the false Battery Gauge readings, I now believe the alternator upgrade as per the first post may have been unnecessary and I do intend re-fitting the Butec at some point verify this. Will report back on this matt...

Re: Which connector is this?

Hi Michel My car is parked at my local Jag dealer but I will try to pop around to get pics for you. I use the original fans. There is IMO no need for high power VW fans or the high speed they offer .... IF .... the cooling system as a whole is good and correct. Consider that my car has aircon and is...

Re: Which connector is this?

Unless you are going for 100% originality, I made a replacement plate from 10mm alu with a modern fan switch - which takes 6mm spade lugs.

Re: Missing timing marks!!

Hi all, just fitted aSNG ignition kit, all went okay until it was time to set the ignition timing... I have no timing plate, I can find the A1 mark on the pulley , but I have nothing to set it against!!! The obvious thing to do is to get the timing plate that SHOULD be mounted below the crank pulle...

Re: V12 ECU

When I converted my S3 to EFI, I mounted the ECU (Megasquirt in my case) to the "ceiling" of the passenger footwell. Fit an easily removeable cover over it to prevent passengers from kicking the connector to the ECU.

Re: V12 ECU

Without a doubt, re-terminating the wires right on the connector pins is 1st prize. I have never looked at the connector with that in mind and can not advise on the feasibility of doing so. I would want to have a second connector on hand in case replacement pins are needed. A safer option is simply ...

Where the radiator fans will be blowing directly onto it? Genuine question: I wonder what the temp of that air coming out the radiator fans is on a hot day.... Note to self: Measure this next chance I get.

Re: Tuning Problems V12

I am a bit baffled by Mark's ignition overheating issue. :scratchheadyellow: About 2 years ago, I recommissioned an S3 FHC for a friend. This ended up just short of a full rebuild. The car was delivered with a botch job of an ignition system but I had an HE ignition system in stock complete with dis...

Re: Tuning Problems V12

All fitted, cranked the engine but it won't fire, no attempt at all. No spark from the coil to the distributor. . . However the Purple connects to Black and the Black connects to Red. I would have thought that black should connect to black. But I could be wrong. *Eish!! It never stops does it... It...
