just to add a bit of clarity. The fulcrums were new repro items, the originals being destroyed during the efforts to separate. no way would the parts slot together without a slight amount of heat or maybe further use of the press. Maybe I coudl ahev used the heavy hammer. But as it is its done and l...

lower front wishbone assembly
Having struggled to get these apart the time came to reassemble with new bushes and new fulcrums. The old ones came apart with much use of a hydraulic press, this set me thinking of how to get it all back together. Simple really: heat the wishbones in the oven and drop in the pins in. For reference ...

torsion bars
As one who is in the midst of this rather amusing job I would like to say thanks for this information. Much useful detail which i wasnt aware of. Like the differences in the lower fulcrums. Saved me much time and frustration. My only other question is why when I am many years past my youth do I stil...

wishbones
Guys, a brief update;
Sometimes its useful to have a mate who has a mate with a 30 tonne press. Turns hours of work into minutes and just cost me favour with his PC. (which my son did anyway)
(Wishbone problems - never heard of them, but i have'nt put it back together yet !)

lower wishbone bolt
Guys, thanks for all your help and advice. I think Ive contracted shipwrights on this job - despite promising myself I wouldnt. I'm going to take out the torsion bars and rebuild from there onwards. As had been said its not a fun job and the car is fighting all the way. Every nut undone and every bo...

Suspension Setting Tool

Lower Front Wishbone Removal
Guys, i am trying without success to remove the bolt which holds the shock absorber in place on the lower wishbone. The bolt is now in such a state that I see the only answer is to remove the forward part of the wishbone and have the bolt pressed out. The bolt no longer passes through the rearward p...

sticking rev counter
Hi Guys, I am asking for bit of guidance here. The rev counter on my 4.2 sometimes/ occasionally sticks at around 2500 rpm. On other occassions its perfect. Would this be the generator or the instrument. What do you think? If it is the head would one of Dave Rawles boards help or is it a specialist ...

starter motor
All I can say is that I purcased a well known brand of gear reduction unit from ebay. Quality was poor and it soon failed. On inspection it was evident that this was a rebuilt unit. I sold this on for spares / repair and bought a starter from Cambridge Motor sport. Its an Edge unit I think. No probl...

Bonnet Chromes
Hi All, Whilst at the Beds show the other weekend I looked closely at the bonnet chromes on the cars present. Now mine are long enough to fit just under the headlamp seals and tuck under the rims, whilst on those I saw that day were mostly trimmed to stop at the point where the chrome bead met the h...
shuttle
Hi,
I did it several years ago in my series 1. No problems with ground clearance but the train did an emergency stop mid way. As luck would have it i was with the car and had to push hard against it to stop it pushing into the car in front. Usual e-type handbrake was u/s !

123 ignition as a replacment for lumenition
Hi, I am so tempted by the 123 set up and am impressed by the glowing reports published I already have the lumenition unit which has worked fine for years, does anyone have any knowledge of replacing this with a 123. Would it be worth the expense. Do you think other benefits can be gained ? any feed...

gear lever gaitor
Hi, Now this may upset some real purists but: I would like to change the gear lever surround on my series 1 4.2 from the "rubber bulb" type to the later leather surround. I know how to get the console off and apart but does anyone know if the existing turret part can be modified or if a replacement ...
