Gearbox removal with engine in situ
There has been some posts related to this, I note Simon has sort of done it, with Getrag gearbox. This article by Dick Maury: http://www.georgiajag.com/Documents/V12transmissionRemoval.html suggests what seems to be fairly straight forward procedure, has anyone else done it like this, might there be...

Re: Rear Brake Bleeding 1971 Series 3 V12
Try opening the bleed screw a bit (lot) more. This worked for me.

Re: Laycock de Normanville
Thx Tony I certainly will, od (Compact type A) needs a lot. But not if I cannot first buy or swap a mainshaft, to convert my gearbox from a KF to a KFN type. So currently I have "all points bulletin" out for a kfn gearbox from xj6 s1 or s2 ...

Re: "...remove bolts securing propeller shaft..."
The propshaft is in two pieces, joined in the middle by a splined shaft which is hidden under a rubber gaiter. If you can simply pull the joint apart ... I have this ahead of me so very keen to learn if this would work, can’t see why not? Tim is saying “If you damage the bolts then it’s no option b...

Laycock de Normanville
Hello, can anyone recommend who I should talk to about parts availability for LdM OD's? I was assuming O/D Spares in Rugby (odspares@aol.com) but have had no response to date. At the same time I note an old PeterCrespin post that includes "...the Laycock engineers who run the repair place in Sheffie...

Re: Manually setting the timing?
Mark beat me to it. Bloody kiwi’s always out of bed too early. Same advice as was given 2 u earlier. Reiterating and expanding: 1. The way to set static timing without a timing mark is to first create a timing mark. Because you often need a timing mark. In the long run, reinstating a timing mark is ...

Re: Headlights
In Aus there was also requirement for the parking lights to be white and front facing instead of the sidelights. I was buying a bunch of stuff from SNGB at the time so I added in the RHD lights with the integral parking lights, SNGB code QRB4698. This was a few years back. Then I got rid of the US s...

Re: 4 Speed Manual OD Gearbox Identification
The oil pump for a 4 speed all synchromesh Jag G/Box, without an OD, is driven by the Inner Race of the rear bearing (by friction) Thx Bill. Do you know, does this mean that, if I were to fit a new mainshaft and O/D unit to my existing KF gearbox, I would then have no gearbox oil pump? Or does the ...

Re: Acrid smoke and low vacuum
Only ever fuelled by me and only ever 98RON. Including yesterday, only time I've ever run out of petrol tuning a car. And it does turbine to 6k quite smoothly which I suspect it wouldn't if the fumes and smoke were due to diesel? Here is one video of the vacuum vs rpm tests: https://1drv.ms/v/s!AiSP...

Re: Acrid smoke and low vacuum
Thx gents. Imo compressions are ok, 9.8 – 10.5 Bar (142 – 152 PSI). Does this suggest valve guides or rings? Yes, with bypass valves removed carbs are now balanced to have same air flow (vacuum) and idle speed 600 rpm (yay!). Carbs were refurb’d by “x-spurt” back to OEM spec about 4 years ago, howev...

Re: 4 Speed Manual OD Gearbox Identification
Seems to me that getting hold of a mainshaft from a Jaguar KFN gearbox will be the biggest problem - do we know if these gearboxes, or shafts where unique to Jaguar, BL were doing a fair bit of economising at the time? Also, this post: http://www.xketype.com/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content....

Re: Acrid smoke and low vacuum
Thanks gents. The clatter turned out to be the air pump, cut/removed the drive belt solved this, gave me confidence to warm up the engine and sync the carbs (which I’d just reinstalled) whereupon the idle vacuum gauge mysteriously improved to a miserable -12”Hg (ish). Disconnecting and plugging the ...

Check the colour of the oil; yellow/brown is engine, red (check yours) is steering hydraulic oil ...
If it is steering, check if the steering rack bellows are also full, leaking oil?

Acrid smoke and low vacuum
Pls can I have your sage advice? Symptom #3 is insufficient manifold vacuum. I’ve tried everything to fix this: blanked off the carb bypasses, repaired the gulp valve, capped all other manifold tappings (for filter box hot air diverter valves and carb bypass valves) and capped the throttle edge tapp...

Re: Compression horespower and engine numbers
Thx Phil. Low barometric pressure will have a direct effect. Also you said you had a low compression engine? If your engine number ends in LA or LB it has 7.8:1 CR, then assuming that 14.7 "rule of thumb" and factoring for 85 instead of 101 kPa barometric pressure gives 7.8 x 14.7 x 85/101 = 96.5 ps...

Re: Compression horespower and engine numbers
Wow James, 190 psi seems a lot from a 7.8:1 V12, if that is what you have? What is yr engine no. suffix, LA or LB? Why were you expecting 160 psi? I found this discussion: http://www.jcna.com/engine-compression-test-e-type-v12-1973 which includes “ The general rule for cylinder cranking prussure is ...

Compression horespower and engine numbers
Hello, does anyone have this knowledge? My car is 1972 US spec with all the emission control paraphernalia and 9:1 compression ratio (engine number suffix is “SA”). As I understand (from www.automobile-catalog.com), European cars with the same compression ratio produce ~9% more power and ~7% more to...

No worries, just be aware that the SNGB upgrade from Opus to CEI (HE system) is electrics only, the vacuum system, retard or advance, will be the same as you have now UNLESS you very specifically asked for this to be different ...
