Re: Dip or blast

I use guys with CO2 which removes only underseal, soda which removes only paint (also for cleaning cyl heads) and coarser media for really rusted components.

Re: HD8 carb issue

Does flooding occur on all carbs? What I usually do: 1 check if and from which overflow pipe fuel is pouring. If not, floats and valves are ok. 2 check that carbs are level, remove dome and piston of carb in question 3 remove fuel completely with clean rag, switch on fuel pump (choke off), check fue...

Might be a slightly damaged jet diaphragm, I experienced this some time ago.

Re: Laycock de Normanville

I had OD on 3rd and 4th on my Healey BJ8, the difference between 3rd with/without OD was minimal and of no practical use. The Jag gearbox has very close ratios, so it will be the same, except maybe if you have a 2.88 axle.

Re: Thermostat Housing Leak

I file down the rim carefully with a warding file and use a good quality sealer (dirko).

Re: Engine Cooling System Flush.

Mercedes recommends: 1kg of citric acid (powder, for baking purposes) for 10 l of water for some of their classic engines (see google). Drain sytem, refill with acid/water mixture, run engine (idle) for 10 min, drain and thouroghly flush, then refill with antifreeze mix. I did it on my 1998 XJ8 a fe...

Re: Export Cars

In 1973/74 my father ordered a XJ V12 LHD directly with the factory and picked it up personally from an official Jaguar dealer in London. It had a GB registration (GDU135N) and the tax disc said "nil- personal export". I cant remember exactly, but he had to return the plates together with some paper...

Re: S1 headlight chrome fitting

The headlights are actually quite good, when you do the relay upgrade and fit halogen bulbs.

Re: Wheel sizes

Depends on what you are aiming for. For standard spirited driving (ie not track), 185s are perfectly ok and will go with 6x15 rims (which fill the arches a bit more, stay with oe backspacing (97mm)). 185s are comfortable and quiet too. If you do a lot of slow speed driving around town and parking in...

Re: Clever instrument panel trick

As Peter said.
After retrimming my car, I realized that the instrument panel would not fold down. I had to cut and remove some flintcote and felt and cut the carpet under the horiz console panel more precisely. The legend strip still touches the radio console- just.

I guess there are not many of these around, let alone for sale. Id travel these miles and listen to the engine- and buy it, if it is not scrap. You will have to go over the engine anyway...

Re: Speeding

Recently, the tolerance was obviously reduced here in Austria, or at least in my home town. We have a 30kph (!) = 19mph speed limit in town, except for specially signed main roads. You get a ticket doing 34, which is still very slow. However, luckily we have many what you call B roads, where you can...

Re: Clutch slave cylinder 'aftermarket' or 'standard'

The original one used to have a circlip to prevent the piston from popping out, which should not happen anyway -theoretically, it happened to me! The last cylinders I ordered from SNG (at 45 EUR) did not have the circlip, but work fine. If I had an original one, I would have resleeved it and restore...

Re: Basic questions when buying an E Type. Question 1

Nothing wrong with a very good Moss box with Redline transmission oil, it gives you a nice feedback and is very rewarding to shift once you have some practice. If you intend to do a lot of long distance high speed touring and you want to retain top performance through the gears, then you might want ...
