The chrome bezel instrument is likely to be from an XJ12 series 1

Re: Purchase Help

Further inquiry on xkedata shows that this has been up for sale for at least 6 months , and there have been two "failed" auctions where it has received only low top bids - IIRC US dollars 32K and in a second auction 43K, in each case failing to reach reserve . There has to be a reason for this

Re: Purchase Help

I agree with all that is said above. Just to add a few thoughts 1. It is difficult to be sure, but the colour does not look like authentic opalescent silver blue to me . That is quite a vivid colour : this one has a much too silvery tint to my eye 2. With those 205/65 tyres it will drive like a pig ...

The one thing you can be absolutely sure about is that anything connected with Transport for London will be a complete shambles

Re: rubber mounting to chassis member rear suspension cradle

Jerry : a very common problem. What I suggest you do is make sure that the cradle is supported, then make up a drift longer in length but smaller in diameter than the bolt, which IIRC is 5/16" and then tap the bolt out from the inside .

Re: MR FIAT 6 SPEED TRANSMISSION

Very badly chosen ratios which will spoil the driving experience , particularly when compared with either the Moss or the EJ ( close ratio ) all synchro box . Both 1st and 2nd are too low

Re: Tachometer

Bernie : it depends how much of a purist you are, but I note that the oil and ammeter have the straight sided bezels, whereas the water and fuel look to be the curved bezels - unless it's a trick of light /shadow . I'm afraid i don't know which are correct for your car

Eagle might be number one in your estimation . However, I'm afraid not everyone shares your view .I regard that quaint old boy William Lyons as number one

Re: Triple carburetors

The short answer is no . The mark 10 carbs had the "hisser" automatic choke , but a much more serious difficulty is that the bells are taller than the E type version and to make matters worse the manifold sets them higher than those on the E type so that they will not fit under the bonnet. As far as...

Re: Sherwood green on the E type

Steve : I remember the colour well, and it was only ever a solid colour with a slightly greyer hue than brg. As far as Jaguar heritage people are concerned, I am afraid that the ones I have met seem to have difficulty distinguishing their coccyx from their olecranon

Interesting : Sherwood green was most certainly a solid rather than a metallic colour, and the shade on my computer screen looks absolutely nothing like it

Re: Setting tickover with different camshafts - JAG4 from Guy Broad

But something does not add up is the paperwork duration is described as 235 degrees. Surely this must be wrong, but I cannot get an answer or sensible explanation from Rob Beere ! Have a look at his website and explain to me how that can be so low. John : the quotation of duration is very much depe...

Oil Pressure Gauge switch . The switch which actuates the ignition warning light in early 4.2 cars screws into the horizontal oil gallery forward of the filter

Re: Tune up

Do you mean backfires, or do you mean it runs on ? Neither of these are in any way normal, and the latter in particular points to the possibility of acutely weak mixture which if allowed to continue may well burn holes in pistons. What are the needles which are fitted - that at least should tell us ...

Re: Reaction plate bolts and other queries S1 4.2

Bryan : if yours is an earlyish 4.2, say 1964-6 , then it is probable that you already have an oil warning light . It is, believe it or not, the ignition warning light on those cars ! You can tell by having a look along the oil gallery running along the right hand side of the block at filter level -...
