Re: OIL AND DIP STICK
Yes, the E-Type requires the felt washer for both sealing and correct oil fill measurement. It seems the seals are no longer available and even when they were they are specified for the saloons and too big. Not tried it myself but someone suggested Boots felt corn plasters have the correct dimension...

Re: Headlamp Sugar Scoop captive nuts on wrong side ?!
Best way to seal the headlamps is to do what Jaguar did in period, liberal use of Dum Dum putty. However a few people here have tried to use it with limited success (search on Dum Dum). I don't think Dum Dum is still produced but Eastwood Flexible Strip Caulk is a good alternative and having strips ...

Re: Rev counter behaving badly
The generator works using magnets to produce a AC voltage pulse. The magnets lose their strength over time which means the generator does not provide sufficient pulses. Before messing with the tachometer, and repairs can be expensive, invest in a new generator (£186) which should look like this: htt...

Re: OIL AND DIP STICK
All E-Type dip sticks have an E stamped on them and it does not stand for :banghead: 'Empty' It is there because it is specific to the E-Type engine, or more correctly the sump design, so no substitutes. The chequered area represents the oil high and low marks so as long as the oil is in that region...

Re: Rev counter behaving badly
If it is an S1 then there is a generator on the rear right hand cam cover. It works by generating a voltage of 1V AC per 100 RPM. They are prone to failure as the magnets get weak. To test remove the generator (three Allen screws - no need to remove the cam cover) and attach the spindle to an electr...

Re: Exhaust system
I have had several exhaust iterations on my OTS which has a powerful modified engine. Best solution is cast manifolds as tubular ones reduce mid range torque, likely will cause the paint of your frames/bonnet to bubble and produce an annoying tinkling sound at very low revs. Do not go with any syste...

Expoxy is lethal if your feet are wet, it was the reason I covered it with the tiles. Looks great but the chances are you wont when your feet slide from under you!

Re: Garage Floor Tiles
Interlocking tiles require a flat surface so any unevenness will need to be addressed. This is usually done by spreading a self levelling screed.

Re: Garage Floor Tiles
Jack stands do not make any significant Mark's but tyres do. Black from the rubber leaches out and stains the tile and it almost impossible to remove. Oil will also stain the tiles over time and I have a major problem following an over winter oil leak. The oil has seeped between the joints and trave...

Evidence from OBL cars #39 and #47 that the early chromed copper or brass strips were indeed lead filled with a groove for the hood cover clips. https://i.imgur.com/Sz648SD.jpg https://i.imgur.com/8sI0je1.jpg https://i.imgur.com/GLhXerC.jpg https://i.imgur.com/i8wL3sI.jpg Because of the cost of manu...

Re: Soft top rear chrome trim profile
The August 1961 SPC shows the 'Chrome Beading on Tonneau' as part BD.19683. By June 1963 SPC it had changed to to BD.21397 as the superseded part for future replacement. The early part is not the same part number as the XK for obvious reasons so what Chuck says is likely correct: https://i.imgur.com...

Re: Hood folding
Before folding run a duster over the plastic screen to avoid scratches and use your hand to make sure there is no crease in it as the hood lowers. I then usually press down on each side to make sure it is seated down as far as possible. This means the hood cover should fit properly. Here is mine bef...

I have been using this stuff (Car Door Rubber Restorer Stick ) on all the rubbers on the E-Type as I have been getting fed up with the bonnet sticking to the bulkhead seal. Superb stuff that does what it says. A 100ml bottle will last for ages and I have used it to treat the rubber seal on the 911(t...
