As above . It well could be a broken / breaking up carbon thrust bearing seen a few go bandy that wasn't that old over the last couple of years , it is Posible to look up at the carbon through the inspection hole in the bell housing at the bottom

I'm a member of the Brooklands Trust, I had notification on 22nd Dec that due to the Covid situation the New Years Day gathering has been postponed. The museum will be closed on the day. Have you checked and cleaned ALL earth points ( even run a temp jump lead from earth pole to engine ) and main 12v lead too
