Slow Cranking and smoking terminations!

Hi Everyone For some time now I've been having issues with the high torque starter slow cranking when the car has been laid up for an extended period. I've cleaned up or replaced all the earth connections but this hasn't solved the problem. At all other times the car starts on the button. More worry...

Re: S1 3.8 FHC

Thanks for the replies. My friend who is also a neighbour is going to dig out all the details including the V5. The car has been in his wife's family for three generations possibly back to when it was new. It belongs to a family of lawyers so I doubt it's dodgy but caveat emptor as they say. I inten...

S1 3.8 FHC

Hi Everyone I have just been given the opportunity to purchase a 3.8 FHC which has been stored in a garage for the last 30 odd years. It won't surprise anyone that it will need a complete body and mechanical rebuild. It has been fitted with a replacement bonnet and tailgate. The car has been off the...

S1 4.2 Brake Servo Reservoir Bottle Bracket

Hi Everyone My car's braking system has been upgraded to 4.2 spec and so sports the square reservoir bottles. I've just had to replace the brake servo reservoir bottle again. This is now the third one the car has had in the eleven years of my ownership. The previous two developed a crack at the neck...

Re: Removing engine

+1 on what Christopher has said. It only takes 1/2 an hour or so to remove the reaction plate if you make the pins described in the Workshop manual. The reaction plate sits in a deep recess formed by the rear of the bellhousing and the front of the gearbox. I can’t fathom why anyone thinks that havi...

Re: What's missing in these photos?

Jeremy You can make your own breather pipe with 15mm copper plumbing pipe. A PO had previously replaced my car's breather pipe with a rubber hose of unknown origin. I opted for a slightly "blingy" look by using chromed copper pipe. It won't rust and was very cheap to make if you have a plumber's ben...

Thanks for the pointers gents. I’m going to keep an eye on Ebay for second hand items. I’m in no rush at the moment so can bide my time.

Cheers

Brake flaring tool

Hi Everyone I'm looking to purchase a good brake flaring tool for the upcoming restoration of my TR250. The one I have currently is to say the least cheap and nasty and is destined for the bin. I've been looking at this one on Fleabay:- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125027208310 It seems to fit the bil...

Re: Covered Headlight Conversion S1.25

The 3.8 Series 1s have their horns mounted internally, one under each sugar scoop. There's a lozenge shaped hole cut out in the left and right hand side of the bonnet air scoop tunnel to allow the sound out and the muck in! You can see one in Geoff's image-just to the right of the horn trumpet. This...

Re: 1969 E Type Series 2 fuses are smoking hot

No one has yet mentioned the possibility of a bad connection between the cable and spade terminal. I had this issue with one of the unfused brown wires which would intermittently produce white smoke on start up. At first this was only visible through the left hand middle dashboard vent. When I event...

Re: Car insurance

There seems to be a marked increase in these a***hole spammers recently.
Is there some way to make it more difficult for them to start posting? Maybe a brief questionnaire to fill in or something similar on signing up.
Can anyone explain what the point of them joining is?

Re: Fuse blowing

Hi As Marek has said the standard car wiring setup does not have an inline fuse anywhere on the primary ignition circuit wiring. If I were you I'd junk it as they're more trouble than they're worth as you're now finding out. They don't adequately protect the primary ignition circuit and certainly do...

Re: Install 2-post or 4-post car lift for storage

A 4 post lift is the way to go. The addition of an axle stand tray and hydraulic jacking beam will allow you to raise the car off it's wheels while still on the lift. I've yet to come across a job that has access issues while using this combination and I've done just about every job with it, from en...

Re: Rattling noise from lower cam chain

Peder

The noise can travel due to the interconnectivity of the exhaust and engine block. If you're unable to pinpoint the noise at the bottom of the engine this may be the reason.

Re: Rattling noise from lower cam chain

Peder You mention the noise sounds like it's coming from under the car. You don't mention which E-Type you have but on Series 1/2 with the standard exhaust setup, the silencers are directly under the doors. It could be a loose baffle which becomes more audible as the gas flow increases. Worth checki...

Re: Accelerator return spring

Hi Tony

A photo would be very useful if you could oblige.
How does the spring pass through the hardura to reach the slot? There doesn't appear to be any opening cut in it to allow this to happen, although mine are reproductions from Aldridge.

Thanks

Re: MOSS SS MANIFOLD

Sorry Gents I seem to have falsely raised expectations. I did a quick trawl of the interweb and it's suggesting that the temperature should read 1200 degrees F not C. Still capable of handling the E-Type's manifold temperatures in standard tune though. I won't be home until Wednesday so will report ...

Re: MOSS SS MANIFOLD

Geoff Barbeque paint is reckoned to be the best paint for longevity. My manifolds need repainting since the high temperature paint I used wasn't high enough! I've now bought gloss black that is rated to 1200 degrees C, but this job is on my winter to do list. One good thing though, the old paint has...
