Re: Lighting wiring issue

Hello and welcome to the Forum. It would be helpful if you included your name and model of E-Type in the footer of your messages. This will save you time with future posts. As to your lighting issues:- The door switches and dash map light switch operate the map light only. The interior light is oper...

Re: Indicator /park light lenses

Pete I had exactly the same problem when I replaced the lenses on my car. I ended up using a Dremel with a rotary cutting disc to separate them. I cut down slightly on the side of the sidelight lens. Once apart I removed the remains on the side of the indicator lens, both cleaned up well. I didn't g...

Maybe someone who's been in suspended animation for the last 20 years? They've a lot of catching up to do if that's the case.

Re: Car lift single post

I've just posted on this subject on another thread. I see you've got height restrictions but at the end of the day a four post lift doesn't require any more height than any other lift in order to operate. There's a common misconception that there's a limit to what you can do, which is not the case. ...

Re: 2 post v Scissor lift

Removing the engine and gearbox using a 4 post lift is very straightforward. You just place a trolley underneath, disconnect everything and raise the car leaving the engine and gearbox on the trolley. Another advantage to this is that the bonnet and radiator can be left in situ. I haven't removed th...

Re: 2 post v Scissor lift

Simon I would recommend a third option-a four post lift. If you couple this with a hydraulic jacking beam then you can do everything a two post lift can do without the dangers. The jacking beam allows the car to be raised off all four wheels at once-one axle on the beam and the other on axle stands ...

Re: Electroplating - a dummies guide

Well I thought it would be useful to update this thread. The problem I was having was using copper wire to hang the anodes in the electrolyte. This then dissolved when current was applied and ended up covering the items to be plated in green barnacles! I also tried stainless steel but it dissolved a...

Re: Motif bar

+1
If you buy a new one it’s almost guaranteed not to fit. Like most of the chrome work it’s virtually bespoke to the car. The shape of the bonnet air scoop is often subtlety different from car to car and probably more so after all these years with repairs and restoration.

Re: Security Alarm

Two problems with the phone idea:- 1. The signal can easily be jammed and I suspect the your local tea leaf has ready access to the necessary technology. 2.This will not work in areas of poor or no signal, for example an underground car park or shipping container. The Tracker works on VHF and can be...

Re: Security Alarm

Well after some research I've found the same five year alarm package for £464. This is less than half the initial price I was quoted by the Tracker Company. Not sure what business model they're using, probably the Dick Turpin version  I'll continue my search to see if I can get it any cheaper...

Re: Security Alarm

Malcolm The company is called Tracker-www.tracker.co.uk. To be fair the cost was for a whole new unit not just the battery so the price was a real bargain  The unit I have is designed for cars which spend long periods with the battery disconnected. Apparently the company have the highest rec...

Security Alarm

Hi Everyone

I've had a Tracker unit fitted to the E-Type for five years at a cost of £340. It's the version that is battery powered with a five year life. I have now been quoted £890 to have it renewed! I politely declined.
So it's recommendation time again please.

Cheers

Re: Electroplating - a dummies guide

I've been using the Gateros plating kit for a few years now. Over time the electrolyte level had gone down significantly, so I decided to buy a new batch. Unfortunately once I'd set this up, complete with new power supply, I've been unable to get anything to plate. This is despite heating the electr...

Re: Auto to Manual Conversion series 2 2+2

Nigel The easiest way to remove the engine & gearbox is from below, especially if you have access to a four post lift as I did. Although a friend managed it with an engine hoist and a large concrete block. This method avoids having to remove and store the bonnet somewhere and the radiator can also r...

Re: Series 1 3.8 Engine Breather Pipe

Stuart I had a look at the thread Steve provided the link for and see my images on drop box are no longer available. I've attached three more showing the route. As you'll appreciate it's difficult to show the pipe in situ unless you remove half of the engine ancillaries. However the fact that I opte...

Re: Relative jet heights on full choke

Julian They were my thoughts as well. I never checked the carbs before I rebuilt them so don't know if the difference was always present. I didn't bother to check the E-Type's carbs after their rebuild either. They may well have the same discrepancies. The Triumph had "Frankenstein" carbs before the...

Re: Relative jet heights on full choke

Hi Steve I did mean to post here. Although it's about the GT6 carbs, the common link is that they are SUs. In any case GT6s left the factory armed with a 2l engine and Stromberg CD150s. My car now sports a 2.5l engine and HS6 SUs. The level of expertise and depth of knowledge here is unparalleled so...

Relative jet heights on full choke

Hi Everyone I've just finished rebuilding the twin HS6 carbs on the Triumph and set up the initial jet heights:- On the first carb that means two full turns down on the adjusting nut, measure the depth with a micrometer (48 thou in this case) and then set up the second jet accordingly. All good so f...

Re: Bad experience with the Brexit

The additional costs post Brexit do not seem to be uniformly applied. My wife has just bought a new ski jacket from France and there were no extra charges levied. Buying anything from the USA valued at more than $15 will mean VAT charges being added at UK customs, so it's not just Brexit. The seller...

Tadek

My under dash panels are also crudely cut aluminium. I strongly suspect mine are also original to my November 61 OTS.
