Hi Rory,
- offtopic, but what a lovely new avatar!
The seats are off my car at the moment, so I should think twice about what to install

Re: 3.8 seat frame colour
Incidentally I believe the factory only painted the lower area which is visible under the seat cushion & underside of the seat if removed. The “vertical” backrest behind the moquette etc. was left raw steel .... well, that’s what I found when I removed the trim on mine. I suspect this is factory co...

Re: Distributor curves
John,
refering to your post#15- yes, it works very well - easy starting, smooth idle, no audible pinging with 95 leadfree. Smooth on overrun. Following this thread I am tempted to try a more aggressive curve.

Re: Repairs to S1 cam cover
Hi Richard,
I always use Loctite 5910, never got them leakfree without it, do not omit the bore for the tach generator.
Before buying a new cover, make sure you have a crack, maybe try a detecting spray.

Re: Distributor curves
The parts cat lists part number C14269,type DMBZ / 40617 up to engine RA1381, from then onwards part number C20679, type 22D6 / 40887A. According to Porter, the change was made in April 63. The next change is given in August 64 engine RA6834, distributor part number C20680. I have a table that lists...

Re: Fuel sender connection at dash.
According to the wiring diagram, greenbrown (GN) is allocated to the flasher. Greenblack (GB) should be the wire from fuel sender to instrument. Some years ago a loom from autosparks we ordered for a P5 Rover was missing a wire altogether by the way.

Hi Baz, indeed the car must be very special to you. With this history I would not even think about selling. Unless you buy a completely nut and bolt restored example, sooner or later you will have to replace the clutch and rear pads anyway, let alone other hidden problems. So better to do the work o...

Re: Speedo failure
Hi Richard,
now that the speedodrive ist out, I'd take the opportunity to dismantle and check or have it rebuilt or get a new one (C17087=BG2402-02 for the moss box). The short shaft/ cable may be damadged where it is crimped to the gear.

bucket seat frame colour code
Hi all,
my driver's seat is out for refurbishment. The seat frame is going to get a new coat of paint. I know it should be gray, but I a not sure about the paint code (BS or RAL). Is it BS381C-694 Dove Grey?
Thank you
Mark

Re: HD8 carb issue
Absolutely right Peter. I was thinking in terms of quantity- the same amount of air has to pass the carbs, no matter if there are two or three of them. So more air and therefore more fuel per unit in an installation with two carbs compared to three, but not richer.

Re: HD8 carb issue
Indeed very interesting. I fully agree with Christopher #46 that the engine with two carbs is sucking harder therefore lifting the piston more thus increasing mixture strenght. The jet height difference between 3.8 and 4.2 (my Etype/ my friends Mk10/- both 3 HD8) is considerable: 1,1mm (3.8) vs 1,6m...

Yes I was asking myself but admittedly nicely excuted, esp the escutcheons and the chrome bits. Are you thinking of producing a little batch ?

Re: Gearbox Tunnel Foam BD27833
Definitely to reduce heat ingress - I also stuffed some foam between both tunnel sides and gearbox. Made the cabin noticably cooler when driving in summer heat for several hours on the motorway.

Re: Interior re-trim suppliers?
Aldridge left a bit to be desired (I ordered an Etype hood and a Mk10 boot trim kit). But I understand that they also do trimming inhouse which might be a different story. Eric Suffolk, Mick Turley or GB trim would be my choice.

Re: Series 2 clutch
Hi James,
my clutch is due for replacement as well - a pity you are so far away
What is the min flywheel thickness? I guess that my car had at least 2 new clutches in the past maybe with scimmed flywheel, so I have to be careful,
thank you

Re: SU Carbs problems
The summary so far is: - check that the throttle discs fully open with the pedal floored - check timing - check distributor (function of centrifugal advance; specific type/ number) - make sure needles and piston springs fit your carb type for a 4.2 Jag application http://sucarb.co.uk/ - adjust carbs...
