Re: s3 hot starting problem

I have also noticed engine temperature gauge runs at 3/4 the car has new radiator header tank and hoses There are two other very relevant cooling issues pertaining to the V12: 1) quite often the bypass valve on the thermostats (that flat disc at the end of the thermostat) don't close the bypass cir...

Re: s3 hot starting problem

Get rid of that OPUS rubbish ASAP!!! Easiest / cheapest?? is to find the "double coil" ignition system from an XJ12 or Daimler double six but there are other choices out there as well. My E is running well on Lumenition all the way to 6000rpm. (Running a V12 at 6000rpm requires a very competent igni...

Re: Dumping coolant some time after switching off.

I do acknowledge that fixing the bypass issue on the thermostats alone could have stopped the dumping problem as that alone would have resulted in more coolant passing by the rearmost cylinders. But why stop at a point that is "good enough"? Why not proceed to a point that is "even better"? Have you...

Dumping coolant some time after switching off.

Despite the fans cycling as they should, running on 82ºC thermostats, perfect radiator and temp being right in the middle of the gauge, my car would dump serious amounts of coolant every now and then. I could find no pattern to this phenomenon. When it dumps coolant, one can hear boiling noises from...

Re: Dropping the IRS

Its pretty much impossible to disconnect the handbrake cable with the IRS in the car. Once its lowered about 6" (15cm) it is much easier to disconnect the handbrake cable.

Re: Dropping the IRS

At most two hours, including lifting the car and supporting it some way to work on the IRS.

I should add that I have a large workshop trolley jack which did make lowering and raising the IRS really easy.

Re: S3 with 2.88 diff

The car is also on 7" x 16" wire wheels and 235/60 x 16 tyres. Not sure what difference that actually makes to the gearing. Not much. Those 235/60/16s are 0.8" (20mm) larger in diameter (10mm in radius) than standard. Your speedo should thus read 60mph when in fact you will be doing 61.4mph actual ...

Mystery vacuum port

I found a vacuum port on my car that must have been open for years.... It sits on the RH bank, on the front banana branch, between the front and rear banana intake branch, below the larger vacuum tube that connects the front and rear banana intake branches. What is it for? One can see it here on thi...

Re: S3 with 2.88 diff

That sounds nice!! With our long distances between destinations of interest, the more overdrive in top gear the bettter. My 7.2L Jensen (and my XJS) is doing 2000rpm at 120km/h and I feel that is still too high for steady cruising. I test drove a 2011 Range Rover TDV8 recently and that car is doing ...

Re: S3 with 2.88 diff

Very interested to hear how this goes Philip. Full update after road test please! I'm assuming you have the factory 4 speed? My mechanic became scared of not meeting the deadline to have the car finished by Wednesday next week - when I need the car of a road trip. We don't have the access to spares...

S3 with 2.88 diff

Just want to share my excitement!! Tomorrow work starts on converting the 3.31 diff in my S3 to 2.88. Now the revs will sit at 2900rpm instead of 3300rpm at our legal cruising speed. The Speedo should also be MUCH more accurate under reading by only 2%. This will make cruising long distances a lot m...

Dropping the IRS

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to drop the Independant Rear Suspension (IRS) from a friend's E-type for the first time. I really did not look forward to it but it turned out to be easier than pulling the engine/tranny combo. I simply suspended the car high on two trestles with a substantial U-shap...

And I maintain that the V12 version of E is going to become highly sought after when your average car only has 3 cyl's or just batteries.

Re: Gauge issue

I'll test it. I wonder how.... Connecting a volt meter to its output simply shows either 12V or 0V in a cyclic manner. The way I understand this "regulator", its really an on/of switch with a preset duty cycle, so I presume it must have a minimum on vs off ratio. Assuming we know what that ratio is...

Re: Ignition mark on Crankshaft Pulley and some more ?!

My advice is for the v12. In the very near future, most cars will have sub 1.0L engines with 2 or 3 cylinders...or batteries. To therefore encounter an E-type, with its sensuous shape and then see and hear its creamy 5.3L V12 will become a life memory - a monument to where mankind has been. :yellow:

Re: Bilstein shocks

How's the performance of your custom Bilstein shocks on rough roads? Keeping in mind that I mine tuned for maximum comfort ie as soft as possible, I have found a few instances where there has been a bad dip in the road where I felt that firmer shocks would have handled those better. In once instanc...

Re: Leaking Steering Rack

Very interesting thread! My car has a 14" steering wheel but I still have to be careful not to apply any pressure to the wheel otherwise the car will respond with immediate & radical directional change. (Lovely when parking though...) So its good to read that adding a single washer (or two) to the P...

Has anyone had any experience with Lumenition ignition on these V12's. as an alternative?
My car is running on Lumenition and pulls strongly all the way to 6k rpm.
