Balanced the front wheels on the car
I found a tyreshop where the elder Italian owner/manager has the equipment for balancing the front wheels when mounted on the car. This did it! (pretty hairy when he spins them up to over 100 MPH.... NB he first balanced all 4 wheels on the traditional machine, and found that they were not very good...

Smiths oil prssure gauge with 100 rather than 60 as max
My S1 3.8 has a different gauge, going all the way to 100.
Was probably installed in Germany along with an oil cooler (no longer in place).
Is this part of the JEC mechanical kit?
I haven?t looked for the sender.
What can I expect to see?
Normal position, or mounted somewhere else?
Thanks,
Peder

Source for overhauled diffs in the UK
Who do I contact to get an overhauled, ready to mount, LSD in a ratio of my preference ?? CMC or other big players? Are all the casings identical? (for the diffs in Jaguars IRS of the 60s and 70s) or is it better to send the existing diff off for overhaul and gearchange?? (but this leaves the car on...

Thanks Harry, sorry, my name is Peder. Scandinavian alternative to Peter, which also exists and is much more common. I think my generator and instrument have been a pair since leaving Coventry, but of course I don?t know for sure. The instrument was sent off to a specialist, whose answer you can see...

I suppose I could try a different generator, but changing them is a messy affair, is it not? Oil pouring out and how is it sealed? Originally with a paper seal and nowadays to prevent leaks, using a seal compound in a tube ?? Got the point about the generator and instrument being factory tested and ...

Current, Oct 2010, situation with regards to a good 5-speed
There seems to have been lots going on in the last few years. I like the gears on my Watson T-5, with 0.8:1 on fifth. I have the original US 3.54 final drive. This makes for great acceleration. Have read about its shortcomings too. JT-5, Broadsport, Getrag, some box from New Zealand... What is a goo...

Rev counter showing 300-500 RPM too much
My 3.8 has the rev counter generator at the rear of the intake camshaft.
The recently serviced instrument is showing 300-500 RPM too many depending on range (the higher the worse).
What does the expertize say about this?
Any simple fixes besides knowing about it when you drive....?

Vibrations with newly balaced wheels
My 420 G is very smooth up until about 50MPH. Then I get small but very noticeable vibrations. Small in that it?s not the slow but heavy vibrations that would hint at the prop shaft for example. New Michelin XWX tyres. If I look through the rear view mirror, the white roadmarkings become very blurre...

And here?s the answer to my problem
The car had a Lumenition system, with its appropriate coil installed in 2006. A Jaguar "specialist" in Switzerland wanted to remove it as it was all of a sudden inoperative. He couldn?t start the car. I said OK to this over the phone. He then took out the Lumention parts and installed the contact br...

Best manual 5-speed for the S3 V12
Most of the earlier discussions relate to the 6 cyl cars.
What is the current best option for the S3, esp with a stronger engine ??

CMC?s twin breathe outlet
I don?t like the oil spills caused by the open crankcase vent on my 3.8. After every proper drive session, the nice, new garage floor gets a 4" pool of oil on it.... Someone mentioned CMC has their own simple solution. Is that so? Easy to install oneself? If so, I will order one. S2 had a different ...

Misfires and eventual brekdown of condensator and contacts
My 3.8 has had an alternator for years. I have had sporadic misfires for some time, but on a high speed, continuous 350 mile drive, it got worse and worse. The car eventually "broke down". The Bosch workshop changed the condensator and contact breakers, saying the condensator was bust and had in tur...

My 3.8 OTS has the older alu panels but was produced on March 22nd, 1964. Either a PO has changed to the older parts, or they found some more alu panels in the factory and decided to use them. My red interior is very even in its wear and tear. Lots of patina with no obvious later additions, besides ...

Me too
I also have this small pool of oil under the crankcase vent flex alu hose.
When the car is out, and you walk about in the garage it?s messy, and needs to be cleaned up.
Did the S2 have en enclosed system?
On my S-type, there is a tube back to the air filter house, just befor the intake manifold.

Full choke: still not enough when cold
My car is very difficult to start when cold, and not used for >1 week.
Full choke, and 6-8 tries will eventually get it going.
OK, during that time I build up a little oil pressure and splash about the oil in the lower regions, but perhaps I need to adjust.....?

To save some trouble
I just read the earlier thread on "improving my S3". Good bits esp on the power steering issue. My idea of very modern FI, is not another 150 HP, but a very smooth running engine albeit with much more HP. This with a mapped ignition will set it up for years to come. Much more direct and even respons...
