Re: Diff ratios
I noticed the same thing, Hugo. The continuity of the thread is lost with the soft deletion. By the way, so far I haven't seen anything that establishes where and how the E-type differential internals where designed. Most likely a collaboration between U.S. and British engineers within the Spicer/Da...

Re: Diff ratios
I have no idea if assembled differentials or internals (certainly not the complete IRS??) were ever shipped from the U.S to the UK. But this did pique my interest regarding the "Salisbury" connection. And from what I was able to find, Salisbury was a U.S. wheel manufacturing company that was purchas...

Re: Diff ratios
I think the main difference between a 3.07 and a 2.88 (apart from 6%) is that I can go out and purchase a 2.88 tomorrow. A s/h 3.07? not so sure I have seen one for sale for a while. I'm sure it has been mentioned previously, but the 3.07 gearset was common on DANA Model 44 differentials in old Jee...

Re: 4.2 and high torque starter issue
As I mentioned on the companion thread over on J-L, 100% new versions of the Nippondenso starters are being produced by a company called Rare Electrical (marketed by Walmart in the U.S.). They list a version for each flywheel (3.8 and 4.2), although the clocking of the mount is suspect for the E typ...

Re: 4.2 and high torque starter issue
I think I have the same style starter, which suffered what appears to be a motor failure last Friday. I took it off the engine and pulled the cover plate on the solenoid portion. Looks like when you turn the key to "start", the solenoid pulls a plunger inward about a half inch whereupon a contactor ...

The Georgia Jag site is where the perception that the seal will self center originated. It won't. Re: Front oil seal
I don't have the part numbers for he Teflon seal/spacer handy, But I would caution against attempting an installation with the engine in the car. The outer circumference is too large for the recess (at least on a 3.8) and absolutely must be fettled to fit. No, it will not find center on its own. I u...

Re: Chain tensioner?
My apologies - if I had read through the link you sent I would have known what you meant. But it is painful for me right now as my computer is going about as fast as the old dial-up pre-broadband days. I find it very strange that some people seem to be fitting tensioners without that little bleed s...

Re: Chain tensioner?
Below is a string about failures of some versions of the Rolon aftermarket tensioners (where the rubber shoe separates from the metal). There are two designs floating around. The newer one has the rubber portion curving over the top of the metal portion of the shoe and is designed like the original ...

Re: Clearance between tranny and tranny well.
I first tried routing it behind the engine following the same path as the vacuum line for the brake servo (3.8). It can be done, but I didn't like how it looked. Then I managed to snake it through the void for the W/S wipers and coolant tubes using of a couple of existing, but unused holes in the fi...

The wool head liner material in my FHC upholstery kit came pre-attached/glued to a fairly dense foam backing that was about 3/8" thick.

Re: 3rd brake light
Hi Marek, yes, your reverse light is a good idea, but if you could design a neat, slim one to fit in the top of the rear window it would be higher and more in the expected place for drivers of modern euroboxes. A thought for you? Geoff Regards Ditto. The elevated location makes sense for an FHC. I'...

Re: Backing Board for inyterior door panels
I had to reshape one of the cards for my '64 FHC and contacted the original supplier (from 1985) for a replacement. OSJI in Muncie Indiana made a replacement from my template at no charge. The new card was from a rubberized cardboard type material that should stand up to moisture very well over the ...

Re: Oil pressure drop
The one I purchased from a U.S. Mini vendor did the same thing. Further, it would not go above 30 psi on a newly rebuild engine. I removed and tested it on my air compressor by increasing air pressure in 10 psi increments up to 70psi. The gauge was definitely stuck at 30 psi. I initially replaced it...

Thanks Chris, I will get a mechanical sending unit, do you know the adapter I need to use, is it 1/4 in BSP? Don't know the thread size for the oil gallery plugs, but the female thread on the oil filter housing is 1/4" BS parallel. The link below provides some info for plumbing a mechanical gauge t...

Re: Importing from US
Once in a while a nice car shows up on the auction site called "Bring a Trailer". You'd want to have someone look it over before bidding, of course. The Jag Lovers site seems to have members around the U.S. and I'd guess many of them would help you with an informed condition evaluation.

Re: 1961 3.8 OTS hot start woes on newly restored car.
In this case I believe the odds favor an electrical problem, however, my old pick up truck exhibited similar symptoms as a result of debris clogging the in-tank fuel pick up screen. The particles would migrate toward the woven "sock" when the engine was running and slowly restrict the fuel flow unti...

Re: Top end clatter - diagnosis help please!
What my measurements imply is that the spring retainer is sitting too high on the valve stem, so that there is a gap between the underside of the shim and the tip of the valve stem despite the shim being seated in its recess in the spring retainer. As suggested earlier, it could also imply a valve ...

Re: Top end clatter - diagnosis help please!
Along the lines of Hugo's remarks...with the valve installed the top edge of the shim should always be above the top of the retainer...and it should sit directly on the top of the valve stem (physical contact). So, you should be able to rock the shim slightly in it's depression in the retainer when ...
