Re: Door top chrome finisher question
The very early cars had not only different door chromes but the chrome under the screen is deeper and the uprights different too, with a capping where the soft top clips on. I am sure that someone will correct me, but I believe that this applies only to the outside lock cars, the first 500 E-types m...

Re: Wheel sizes
I second wholeheartedly David's comments above. Might I add that while it is a personal choice I find the painted rather than the chrome wheels suit the car better. And they are much cheaper!

Re: Aluminium under dash panels change date
This information is taken from page 78 of the latest Thomas Haddock reference book, and as I thought the change from alloy panels to leather(vinyl came later) took place in September 1963. Prior to that there were two styles of alloy dash, one dot pattern for the early cars and the other like a seri...

About September 1963 from memory, but I haven't looked it up so may be a tad out.

Re: 150 MPH Number plate
Here in France all will change in 2021 for old car registrations. The government has decided to abolish all old style plates and replace with new style numbers and letters. Apparently this is to "clean the system" of cars that no longer exist.

Re: Number plate light bezels
James told me he was making them again after a NOS pair sold on Ebay for £500. I didn't know he was making them for Australia though! Next time I speak to him I'll mention it, but, as a past concours judge, I doubt I would have noticed it really. Too busy thinking of Lucas, no name at all, and hopin...

I think you will find that they also used white mahogany for the early rims.

Re: Wheel inner arch & floor paint in original S1 3.8
Original is all very well if you don't plan to use the car much, but you might be making a dreadful decision if you do. The U-Pol is used for pick-up beds and is exceptionally tough, and you can't see the difference once the top coat is on. I rest easy knowing mine has this treatment. Just my take o...

Re: Zeus Callipers
I have had Zeus problems from time to time, but not drag as you describe it. I just get the front slowly locking on and so always carry a 7/16 in the glove box. I've changed to aeroquip hoses, and the problem is rare so I live with it. I can go months without a problem and then suddenly the front N/...
Re: MPG
In this photo are two E-types, one my 1961 flat floor and the other a 1972 V12. On a run from Hampshire to St Tropez which was the more economical? Well, most would say the 3.8 but they'd be wrong. The V12 sported an XJ6 overdrive box and a 2.88 rear axle. Including some spirited driving we worked o...
Re: MPG
Over 100,000 miles I averaged 23 mpg, then had the engine rebuilt and the carbs by Burlen. Now I get 20 mpg and I can't for the life of me figure out why. I'm not bothered, because in the scheme of things it doesn't really matter, but I still wonder why.

Re: Parts quality
It seems to me, both from experience and talking to SNGB, that some effort is being made to improve the quality of replacement parts. Things that I carried and regularly failed were, for example, a fuel pump, in line brake switch and especially an oil pressure sender, of which I have had numerous. B...

Then look at A-frames from E-type Fabs. I bought mine in 2014 for £2,000 I think they are more than double that now.

Re: Oh no! Engine frame damage, could it be repaired?
A restorer told me that he won't use any A-frames except those from E-type Fabs because those from Robey are not correct. The problem, the last time I heard, is that E-type Fabs have put their prices up to £4,000 for the A-frames. After 25 years I bought mine from them five years back and they were ...

I put the Coolcat switch in place when I bought the fan but found that it seemed to cut in a little late for my liking and went back to the old Otter switch. Four years later everything is still fine.

Re: New distributor? 123 or Pertronix?
I bought the XKSS 18 years ago already fitted with Lumenition, my first experience of such. In 28,000 miles it has performed impeccably except for one unnerving thing; on a rare occasion just turning on the ignition will start the engine! Obviously the engine stopped just at the top of the ignition ...
