David : my experience with alloy heads is limited to Jaguar, Daimler V8 , Rover 4 cyl and 8 cyl , triumph 2 litre and oddly enough Vauxhall so is not particularly extensive, but it suggests that provided the engine is cold there is little chance of warpage . Daimler, for instance, allows the removal...

On what basis do you say the Jaguar Heritage Trust does not own the copyright or other intellectual property right in the records ? Equally, if you assert that you are in some way an assignee of the copyright or other intellectual property right , on what basis do you assert that ? Just in case you ...

The question of advisability of taking off cylinder head nuts depends very much on what engine you have. With the short stud blocks fitted up to about 1967/8 there is not much chance of harm provided you do it when the engine is cold , drain the coolant to below block deck level, and only do it one ...

David : I do this quite often and I just use a small brush round the d washers etc and a larger brush for the rest of it. I do not bother masking since even if you do get a spot on a nut it is very easy to wipe off with a thinners rag

If you look at the top of the pistons, they are probably marked with "Front" which gives you the direction they face. If the pistons are split skirt ( which on a 4.2 they may not be ) the split wall goes to the left hand/exhaust side of the engine . If they are solid skirt, then the numbered faces o...

If the doors are original and have not been "doctored" i.e stuffed with filler etc., there is no reason why you cannot repair them at relatively moderate cost by re-skinning them. The last time I bought a skin it was about ?60 so they are probably rather more than that now- checked Robeys and it is ...

Paul : I am a bit puzzled about the square plate you refer to . Do you mean internal to the distributor body ( and if so above or below the "points plate") ? or do you mean external to it, and if so at what level ?Incidentally, if you look at the distributor body - lower than the level of the vac ca...

John : I looked for them for ages some years ago and never found any. In the end I took mine off, bead blasted them and repainted them with good results . However, someone has since told me that they may be the same as those on classic minis - worth a look anyway

I have had Zeus on my FHC for 20 years and never had a moment's trouble with them, and when I rebuilt the car the spares I wanted ( seals etc ) came by return of post. A much cheaper approach is to fit Volvo 244 calipers, or go for S2 E type uprights and calipers . ?780 sounds rather a lot to me

Malc : it is from a late 420 ( or just possibly a Daimler Sovereign although this is less likely) . Peter Crespin may be able to tell you whether this has the correct overdrive which i think has to be J type in order to fit in the tunnel without tin-bashing

I have always liked the Vredestein 185s which I bought from Longstone on Dougal's advice. i have them on my FHC and my Mark2. However, Dougal changed his mind and no longer seems to recommend them, and I have recently had a failure on one where the carcase is joined together. Now it is fair to say t...

Malcolm : I really would not let the apparently lower 1st gear worry you. The S type box probably does have a lower 1st gear than for the sports cars for the simple reason that the all up weight 4 up and luggage of an Stype is probably over 2 tons, and it has to be able to achieve a steep hill resta...

The problem with a two post lifts are several 1. Getting the arms to appropriate support points can be difficult 2. You cannot have a moveable 2 post lift, whereas 4 posters can be equipped with castors 3.For E types, achieving proper point of balance can be difficult 4. You still have to grovel und...

I did at one time have the same problem, and I think ( although it was the thick end of 20 years ago now so I would not be dogmatic about it ) the solution was to adjust the stop switch which is controlled by the knurled knob which protrudes through the front face of the bulkhead close to the heater...

I'm still wary of the combination of electrics and flammables , particularly having been shown two electronic SU pumps - admittedly of the double headed type which I think come from an S3 or an XK 150 - which had actually melted which suggests that fuse protection...

Dave : I really do not like anything electrical being intimately connected with up to 14 gallons of fuel ( although I suppose that in fact the tank is at its most dangerous when nearly empty ! ) . Also, sod's law dictates that if you have a fault in the pump, it will happen with a full tank, when ex...

I cannot agree more strongly with Heuer . When I started out with an E in 1993, it came with 205/70 on 5.5 inch wheels. It was a nightmare with heavy and lifeless steering, difficulty changing a rear wheel, and nastiest of all, on full lock it would foul the wheelarches at the front so that the car ...

Or similarly the " mushroom" dustshields on the driveshafts can come loose ( or rot away where the jubilee clip secures them to the driveshaft ), and start touching all sorts of bits and pieces
