Re: Smell in cockpit of S3 OTS
Thanks to all for the feedback and advice so far. I've been busy with my IRS, sorting out an oil leak from the final drive and cleaning up an epic amount of grease that's built up over the years, so haven't had time to work on the smell. Talking to a local owner of an S3, he has made some progress w...

Re: Smell in cockpit of S3 OTS
Thanks for you responses guys. Defo no mouse nest in the heater, that's been stripped back to bare metal and repainted with new seals. I'll set too with a selection of oils and greases, a camping stove and an old frying pan and try to generate the smell, hopefully I'll find it before I develop a sub...

Re: Smell in cockpit of S3 OTS
Hi Chris It's not old wet interior, it's fuel or oil - it could be engine fumes, or hot oil coming off the exhaust. It's there with the roof up, and down - probably worse with the roof up because there's not as much ventilation going on with the roof up. It's an early car, without the additional duc...

Re: Final drive end play
Thanks all, and thanks to Steve for the nudge (In another post) to update this post. I went back to the diff again and had a check for play and had a go at measuring free play with a dial indicator. Based on the results and Dave's comments re-clunk, and the fact that the diff wasn't noisy before tak...

Smell in cockpit of S3 OTS
Ever since I bought my car there is a strong smell in the cockpit when driving. It's bearable for a petrolhead, but the missus won't ride in the car with me, which (bizarrely) is spoiling my enjoyment of the car. Has anybody else had a similar problem? Better, has anyone found a cause and solution? ...

Re: Final drive end play
Hi Gents Thanks for your replies. I haven't replaced the oil seal yet, the diff is out of the cage which is at the powder coaters and I will replace the oil seal once the IRS is back together again and I can lock the thing with the handbrake (Ed China - Wheeler Dealers). If I pull the flange along t...

Final drive end play
I've taken the final drive out of my S3 to replace the oil seal, it has been leaking oil for some time now. The unit isn't noisy, so I had no intention to do anything more but on checking for play in the drive pinion shaft I've found no obvious end float but there is an appreciable clunk when I appl...

S3 final drive colour?
Simple question... what colour were the diff casings on early S3's?
Mine has remnants of something like red lead colour, but I've heard they were originally black. I can't find anything in the reference books I have, or in JCNA judges guide.

Re: Brake Master Cylinder?
Thanks for the progress report Mike. I had previously serviced the reaction valve with red grease but that stopped the brakes binding for just a short while. Thinking things through, I couldn't think of anything that would cause the intermittent brake problems I was having other than water in the br...

Re: Brake Master Cylinder?
Hi Mike
Did you come right on this problem? What did you fix/change?
My s3 has the exact same problem, and not in traffic or in hot weather.
Cheers

Loss of Self Centring Steering
Hi folks
Since installing my rebuilt engine the steering has lost most of its self centring.
Has anyone had similar problems? What's the cause? What's the fix?
Thank you
Nigel

Re: Alternator Problems
Sorted!
In the end I went to a local auto electrician who checked everything, cleaned the brushes and adjusted the earth connection through the cable holder and hay presto everything is working fine.
Thanks to all for your contributions.
Cheers

Thanks Rob, a good suggestion but all through the work I've done on the car I've gone for originality and don't plan to change now.
Thanks again

Alternator Problems
Hi All I'm having problems with the charging system on my S3. The engine has been out for the last 18 mths, charging system was working fine before engine removal but now everything is back together- nothing but the red warning light. From the below post I've tested all the prescribed links and ever...

Tex door mirrors -how to adjust
Hi Folks I have a Tex door mirror on my car. When it’s in my preferred position for driving it flops back to near parallel with the door above 40mph. Anybody had the same problem and found a fix? I’m guessing I have to take the glass out but can’t see an obvious way to do that either. Any help much ...

Auto transmission cable adjustment
I'm struggling with the adjuster on my transmission. The cable is too short, it's a b#@@ßÞ to get at. Does anyone have any experience of this? What size are the nuts? I've used 14mm and 9/16ths spanners (neither seems a perfect fit) and a mole wrench. I've already damaged the nuts a little as you ca...
