Re: E type rebirth

A video on the Jaguar website shows the restored car with LHD. I don't think the gear lever gaiter is 'correct' for a May '65 car though. Shouldn't it have a rubber boot ?

Re: Front and rear brake upgrade for E type series 1 1/2

I've just bought Coopercraft aluminium front upgrades. They look well made. The larger caliper though needs a piece cutting from the dust shield. I was going to buy a new set of shields and keep the originals until I found that new shields will cost £200 each ! I'm weighing up whether to leave the s...

I used to use approved service agents for repairs/servicing until I realised that the Rolex UK service centre is in Bexley, Kent and they have a counter service. Worth the journey (or a telephone call).

Neil,

The heat shield fitted from 1E1545 is C26500. It is illustrated in the SC parts catalogue but doesn't show how or to what it is fitted.

Clausager's book mentions a change in the brake system for S1 FHCs (1E 21000 on) and roadsters (1E1413 on) in October 1965 to have uniformity with the 2+2. 'New servo, changes to vacuum lines and hydraulic pipes'.

Yes, perhaps. Mines an early 4.2 bumper.

You might find the pictures for bonnet & fittings in the SC Parts catalogue/website better than those by SNGB.

Yves, If these are any help... (I took them when I attached a rally plate holder to the underside of the overrider so pay no attention to the new looking bracket in the first photo). The washer with the tapered diameter spaces the bumper from the bodywork on the side bolt. It isn't used for the fron...

If it is a tubed tyre I doubt that the regular tyre fitters will keep tubes on their stock list. I recently had a puncture in a tubed tyre whilst up near Teeside and it was a bit of a hunt to find a new tube. A v.g. mobile tyre fitters replaced the tube for ?15, but they didn't try to rebalance the ...

So, without the seal the oil level reading on the dipstick is a few mm too high (i.e. overfull) ?

David,

They do say that the IRS is sensitive to tyre pressure, but what difference do you feel +3psi makes ?

And 30 at the front rather than 32 ? For ride or roadholding ?

I found the rear 3/4 window seals a real pig to do. Basically the Baines (& all the other seals it seems) use solid rubber in the dovetail T where the originals used a foamed cell (like an Aero bar) which was much more compliant. Did someone say that Hutson's rubber seals are better than most ? Nick

Just a thought - check the condition of the earth strap. I have seen similar problems because the earth strap to the engine is corroded or otherwise & makes a poor electrical connection with the engine. The current is enough to spin the pinion but not enough to turn the engine.

Thanks Moe, I think my ride height is pretty much as standard but yes it would be useful to check. Also I haven't yet checked to see what my current castor angle is - your 'crude' check method sounds straightforward. I just wanted to see first if there was a 'oh yes, we all set to less than the book...

Castor angle on front suspension

Has anyone tried lower castor angles than the 2 deg +/- 0.5 deg in the manual ? I have found my steering to be very heavy when cornering sharp bends and I was wondering how much effect 2 degrees has on the steering load. I saw the following article in an E-type club newsletter from 2007. It mentions...

Tim, Not much help for you, but I'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one who found this a tiresome task. I commented elsewhere on the forum that the base of the original seal was foam filled, which made it more compliant to press into the dovetail. The replacement seals all seem to be solid rubbe...

The pistons are stiff on the pin, even when new. There is a compensation mechanism inside the piston which grips the pin tightly.

Oil seals were only fitted to inlet valve guides from December 1966 onwards (from engine No. 7E11668, 7E52687). My March '65 car didn't have them.

I have often wondered why the door and window seals can't be made as per original with the soft honeycomb centre (sorry - sounds like some kind of chocolate bar !) used by Jaguar. The suppliers presumably can make more profit marking up the cost of a cheaper product than they can from a 'properly ma...
