Re: Jumping and spitting under acceleration

Hi The classic Opus failure mode normally doesn’t start until after the amplifier warms up. Your problem is with a cold engine so may indeed be carburettor related, have you looked at the colour of your plugs? On my V12 if I put the choke in too early when cold, the car will spit back through the ca...

Re: Feeling a little low!

Hi I had a similar problem with my S3. Not helped by having 60 profile tyres. Even with New springs and Koni shocks it was still low. I got a local engineering shop to make up spacers to fit to the bottom of the Konis. SNG have some which may be enough. Since fitting the spacers my car sits at the ...

Re: brakes stays slightly applied after stop

Hi the reaction valve is the white plastic item attached to the front of the master cylinder. The little piston that can be sticky is in the body of the master cylinder behind the reaction valve. If you have either the parts manual or the service manual for the car, or check the knowledge base, ther...

Hi
Would this tool work with the S3 IRS. I’m not sure what the rear ARB bolts are?
Any pictures of the thing in action

Re: Ignition Amplifier

Whilst your in the ignition mode. I fitted the sng kit and ran it quite a while with no issues. Then I started getting moisture or vapour buildup in the distributor cap, leading to missing. Jaguar had issues with distributor caps exploding due vapour leaking into the cap, through the distributor. So...

Re: Ignition Amplifier

Hi Colin
I’m not sure what’s involved, mine was fitted by British vacuum when they drilled my carb as well.
British vacuum are very user friendly and will answer any queries.
Their website is a mine of useful info on vacuum advance modules, and distributor numbers etc.
Cheers

Re: Ignition Amplifier

Hi guys The amp from SNG does use the HEI chip the same as in the later cars, and the distributor is rebuilt to HEI spec, but with a vacuum module as per the original system. It’s easy to change to a vacuum advance module at a later stage. British vacuum can supply suitable ones. I can vouch for Bri...

Re: Ignition Amplifier

Hi Des If it is the original amplifier OPUS, probably still in the valley, or maybe shifted to the front rail, then don't waste your time fixing it, replace it with the later HEI amp and dizzy as fitted to the later V12's These can be sourced from wreckers. The OPUS is notoriously unreliable, and pr...

Re: Am I a little hot?

Hi My series 3 which has thermostats fitted, and a new radiator, runs with the needle on the R of normal, and never shifts much at all on the open road. If crawling in a line on a hot day it moves slightly towards the A. The fans come on just above the R. I did have a manual gauge fitted, and the R ...

Re: Manually setting the timing?

Hi guys Steve, I also fitted the SNG ignition upgrade, you’ll like it. A couple of things with it, they recommend a very conservative static timing setting, 8dtdc I think. When you figure out where TDC is you may wish to set 12 deg BTDC, which was the jaguar recommended setting. The distributor fron...

Re: Manually setting the timing?

Hi Why don't you make a double stop measuring device from an old spark plug. Knock out the center, and braize a nut to the top then use an appropriate sized bolt through the nut. This simple device will allow you to accurately find TDC on the No1 cylinder, front right. Then you could either make up ...

Re: Scotland to New Zealand

Hi A yes, there is a Jag drivers club in Tauranga, not sure of contact details. For parts and anything else, Trademe is the best source. Yes big and heavy bits will be best coming in as your personal items when you arrive, freight costs are always an issue. For smaller stuff I just get SNG to freigh...

Re: Timing a v12 with no timing marks!

Hi
Be careful if using a dial gauge to set TDC. Do not turn the engine backwards as you may damage the timing chain tensioner.
Use the double stop method, plenty of posts on the subject.

Re: Scotland to New Zealand

hi Algrant All good advice so far. Bringing GBP to Nz will give you a good currency gain so buying whatever services you need down here will be reasonable. There are a number of top quality restorers, think Beacham, or Tempero at the top end, and also plenty of old school mechanical types that can f...

Re: s3 auto to manual conversion.

I think you would be disappointed with the manual 4 speed box. I had one in my car and in 4th it was revving too high for my liking at normal road speeds. In my case I didn't have the Overdrive box choice, so wound up fitting a Getrag 5 speed, which I like, but it did need an adaptor plate to mount ...

Yikes
how about one of those telescopic antenna like devices with a strong magnet on the bottom, some are stronger than others.
Then when you have lifted it a hooked wire may be able to be used.
Good luck

Re: opus ignition system

Hi Colin, As usual our resident expert Marek has posted the good gen. Here are a couple of websites I used to research when I was doing the mod on my car. The british vacuum site is useful to ensure you have the appropriate vacuum module. Following his advice I wound up using the 54405202 unit which...

Re: opus ignition system

Hi Philip
Isn’t the issue that, in your case, with vacuum still being provided to the advance capsule at idle, then extra advance will be provided at idle, which I believe is undesirable.
Well jaguar thought so which is why they set up the system to avoid this.

Re: SU fuel pump electronic upgrade

I have just fitted Marek’s pump upgrade, and it’s working as advertised. His instructions are detailed with clear photos. It’s just as well I did the job at this time, as the points in the pump were quite pitted, the very symptom Marek’s mod is designed to reduce. I’ve cleaned them up and will be in...
