Re: new exhaust
Reminds me of my Triumph bikes. The 500s were dearer than the 350s just because they had bigger holes in the cylinder block!max-it-out wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 10:34 amAlso, I wondered why the " Sports " system was more expensive than the standard item , when the only difference was a bit less metal in the silencers

US special
Might be of interest to US members. Not often a ‘Jag’ can be truly called unique. The panels are the only set in existence apart from the full experimental prototype Lynx built from the same moulds around 1990.

Re: Body shape FHC vs 2+2
The real lesson is how well Jaguar managed to accommodate two modestly-sized passengers without making it look like an estate car. By positioning flat floors lower and placing the rear bulkhead horizontally they got foot and seat room. Then with a nip and tuck up front to a curved roof to a re-sized...

Re: Body shape FHC vs 2+2
The 'hips' (the upper rear wheel arches and rear upper quarter below the sides of the quarterlights and hatch), are deeper/different between any 2+2 and any FHC. Wow, I hadn't realised that. Every day is a school day! It’s more obvious in profile when you see that although the hatch is the same it ...

Re: Body shape FHC vs 2+2
The doors interchange on external shape and will fit every hard top body style. But early and late 3.8 rear doors and glass and chrome will not interchange with later 3.8 and everything else. The glass and door aperture and trim shapes are subtly different and need to be matched to fit properly. Bei...

Re: Steering rack mounts
Just about to replace the steering rack mountings (again) due to premature delamination on my S2. Are you sure the suspension is correctly assembled? When you detach the tie rod ball joints and jack up the front, what is the exact distance centre-to-centre of the fully-extended dampers? Many are ru...

Re: One E-Type less in the world
Less likely with other carbs, but now you know why factory vent pipes for SU float chambers run right to the bottom of the engine and away from the distributor. More than one genuine D-Type, and likely several replicas, have burnt to a crisp for the same reason. No choke, over-eager pushing of the a...

Re: Flywheel Bolts and Crank Spigot
If you read carefully what I said you will realise that I was correcting Christopher's assertion that torque to yield is an old wife's tale. I also said that there is no harm in changing the bolts because you never know what abuse they may have had in the past. Rather than talk to excess or snap, I...

Re: Flywheel Bolts and Crank Spigot
As for the bolt stretch, it is a thing. There are many instances where bolts are fitted and tightened just beyond their yield strength but below their ultimate tensile strength. It is to ensure that the joint will maintain its clamping force through the loading cycles it endures. Sorry, but there a...

Re: Model Year Production Dates
In the US they go by the spec of the car, not the date it was made or first registered. Nothing wrong with that in principle if they get it consistently correct. Typically, in the UK the next year's models start being built after the summer holidays when they've had a chance to prepare. So August/Se...

Thanks, Steve. I forgot to change my E Type Forum address too (now done), but what I still need to do is change my location on the Zeemaps world map of E Types Much appreciated, Mark I think you just do a screen grab, print out the map, cut the bit out showing your E-Type in Virginia, and stick it ...

Doesn't sound that good. Even with a chuffing great scaffolding pole over the lever, I'd expect the tommy bar to bend, not the thread to strip. That or the vice to pull off the bench....

So far, Clive has not said anything that has made me realise that he is full of knowledge and experience. No knockout punch. Looking back at who-said-what, I'm slightly surprised to see it was Clive who asked the questions in paras 2&3 of post #25. By the time I pressed 'Submit', a couple of others...

Re: E type Roll Centre and Handling
Does anyone know why the long frame diagonal passes through the vertical frame section holding the engine mount, without apparently being attached to it? Why the torsion bar front suspension? Geoff's note alluded to the lack of stiffness in the front frame, is that the reason? Following on from tha...

Re: Key ring just ended
I took a perverse pleasure in carving mine up to make it circular to fit in an alloy centre I turned for the D steering wheel. Then I decided not to use the centre after all.
