Thanks guys all the info was much appreciated and its helped me a lot cheers.
Just a small tip: Roman numerals were only ever used on the large ‘Mark’ saloons and stopped at X.

The compact saloons, XJ, E-Type etc. used normal numbers.

Re: 1961 or 1962?

Is it a US re-import? In the US documentation it’s typical to list the model year, which is the calendar year after the year of manufacture for cars made after the summer break. In the UK it’s usually aged by date of first registration. Both systems are subject to anomalies. My 66 was built on April...

Re: Moss box synchromesh

Interesting - but presumably unconnected to the graunchy first/second change (in either direction) that you have to 'learn your way around'? I never found the others too bad. I must also say that the two LHD Moss box cars I drove were better for selecting first from stationary rather than reverse. T...

The more you use them, the better they get. Which is why they are almost always reported as poor these days by people who avoid night or wet driving. Which is not 'Gran Turismo Joe'...! I regarded them as one area where the 1960s technology really showed up compared to modern tech. I still do, espec...

Re: XKSS/Dtype

I took the question to be about standard spec, which is 16” 3-spoke. Hawthorn did prefer his own 4-spoke but when he did that filmed lap in 56 he was in a short nose with a standaard 3-spoke wheel. The D, like the S1 E, has quite a lot of rake and reach adjustment and of course people make compromis...

Re: Status Quo

The 16” D uses inverted Y 120 degree spokes to see the offset dials more clearly. The 16” E has dials dead ahead, so keeps the top half clear to view them. The D wheel is much stiffer, as is the column.

Hi
Does anyone know what the ORIGINAL diameter of the wooden 3 spoke steering wheel is on an XKSS or Dtype Jag?
I m discussing it with a friend and he reckons 15” but I’m thinking 16”?
Anyone know??
Robbie
You’re right, your friend is not. Don’t let him near your dosage charts…. :-)

That looks like grit got into the face of the mallet. At least the pock marks do. Hard to see if there are wavy deformities too, which could be polishing error. How many were affected?

Re: Wheel spinner quality.

Something is definitely wrong there. I smack the crap out of all of mine with a lead hammer and absolutely no marks on any. The hammer however looks like it has been extensively chewed by Cerberus. Agree totally. I cannot see how a mallet that gets marked if I dig in a thumbnail can possibly mark a...

Re: When is an import not an import?

Thanks all. I will never change citizenship and still have a few years to run on my UK license plus insurance isn’t really the issue, it’s the registration restriction of 6 months max on registration from country of origin. Apart from anything, the 94-2003 XJ cars have a different boot lid that does...

Re: When is an import not an import?

You’re right Chris but I didn’t actually say I’d ship it back… Maybe an ever-moving target would be hard to catch? After a year or two my $2,500 Vanden Plas wouldn’t owe me a penny and might do as a parts car or disposal. I did almost buy a UK X-Type estate a few weeks ago. I just recall living near...

I lost a cousin in Belgium without being able to attend his funeral and haven’t seen half a dozen otgers in Belgium and my kids and sisters in the UK. In otger words, I’m seriously overdue ...

Re: Top end tapping - still

I had one valve that was very noisy. The reason was that I had a new valve seat fitted and it was not properly ground back to factory tolerance by the engineers, so the valve sat lower in the head. Only by 20 thou, but this meant that the shim at the other end was sitting in its recess in the sprin...

Good call. And for the avoidance of doubt, I did try the Allen screw retaining operation myself once, but never again. I’m a plate and self tapper person too.

Out of curiosity, what makes you think the engine needs a do—over?

Hello Paul, and welcome to the madhouse. It’s a valid, well-executed and unobtrusive modification, that requires equipment and skill beyond the capability of most DIY people. No offence (well, maybe a teeny-weeny bit) but not recognising quality workmanship, naming the parts incorrectly, and calling...

Re: Brake upgrade

What pads have you got? I suspect they aren’t bog-standard. This sounds like a pad problem - too hard a material that doesn’t bite fully until it warms up. The easiest thing is to try a standard compound. Going for a more ‘macho’ spec is often a go faster upgrade that doesn’t improve matters for nor...
