Re: 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I Fixed Head Coupé – The Geneva Launch Car

It's Glasurit/R-M early Jaguar Gunmetal as used by Classic Jaguar in Austin, Texas on their top quality restorations. In fact Glasurit is probably the only paint manufacturer in the world who have maintained this color mix since its inception. The color shifts dramatically depending on the light. as...

Re: Fuel filter (Glass Bowl)

FYI. The top of the WIX filter element contacts the raised boss around the short "pipe" in the aluminum casting before the outer radius of the filter reaches the flange for the gasket/seal. As of two years ago, the seal that was included in the WIX packaging was too thin to take up the resultant gap...

"Or buy MWS or Dayton, of both of which I read horror stories in another thread ?" I can only speak from personal experience, Carsten, but I've been running tubeless Dayton "6X15's for about 4 years and have absolutely NO problems. They hold air as well as modern wheels do and there is no vibration...

Re: Custom wheels series 1

Having noted in a post above that 16" diameter provides a greater selection of performance tires, I must say that I don't care for the appearance of the larger wheel when installed on the car (photos in previous post). I believe the vintage look is compromised when the sidewall height of the tire is...

John North over on Jag Lovers is rebuilding a gearbox and mentioned problems with shift fork wear. You might want to touch base with him. Here's the thread. https://forums.jag-lovers.com/t/worn-shift-forks/369016

Re: Custom wheels series 1

A 16" wheel really opens up the selection of modern profile performance oriented tires. Speed rated tires in the 15" size are becoming difficult to find in sizes that work with the E-type. The diameter of a 225/60 16 is 26.6", which is very close to the 185 diameter (minimizes speedometer error). An...

Re: Custom wheels series 1

The Boranni link depicts a wheel with a large lip, and the description says it's a 5x16. So the offset would have to be ridiculous. In any case a 5" wheel would not accommodate a wide tire. I'm using Dayton 6x15" hub laced wheels. The offset is slightly greater than for the standard bead laced wheel...

Re: Help pls - Alternator voltage too high, blowing LEDs?

Follow up to my earlier post.... A friend who is handy with electronics believes that the little pulsed dimming device (based on Field Effect Transistors) that I'm using for the strip lights in the tach and speedometer does provide a modicum of over voltage protection as long as it is set to reduce ...

Re: Dashboard wiring loom - should I?

If you want a robust electrical system for the long term you might overlay the "Bob Skelly" redesign over the original system. It adds multiple relays and new fuse panels (in most cases superseding the originals). My expansion of his design philosophy is depicted in the photo below. At the top of th...

Re: Dashboard wiring loom - should I?

I have to wonder about replacing a functional loom for one from a vendor that is known to have bad connectors, and then cutting out sections from the old loom to repair the new one. I had all of the looms out for a rotisserie restoration. The dash and smaller looms all looked excellent and passed a ...

Re: Paint spray setup

I recently purchased a turbine HVLP system. The five stage turbine produces 9.5 CFM. I will evaluate it during the repaint of my street rod pickup truck in my garage next week. The advantages over conventional high pressure systems and even intermediate pressure HVLP guns (using a conventional air c...

Re: Help pls - Alternator voltage too high, blowing LEDs?

I couldn't find a data sheet for the dimmer, but one commenter on Amazon said he took one apart and the are three field effect transisters inside. My limited reading on Wikipedia suggests that FETs have an inherent resistance to voltage spikes. So maybe the little dimmer is a sort of blocking device...

Re: Help pls - Alternator voltage too high, blowing LEDs?

Id guess your dimmer device is a variable pulse width modulator type. It very rapidly turns the leds on and off. By varying the relative off and On times the dimming is achieved. If it works then fine. Could you (or perhaps Marek or Ray) speculate as to whether a PWM type dimming device (I'm sure y...

Re: Help pls - Alternator voltage too high, blowing LEDs?

Thanks, Julian. The dimmer device in the photo is presently installed in the tach and speedo circuit, which is indeed "floating" in my installation. It works well in reducing the light intensity. I have no idea if it also serves the function of a limiting driver. (I do know the selected/reduced ligh...
