Re: Emissions equipment

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum, The Strombergs are not original to your S2 and are almost certainly from a later XJ6. The pinched off steel pipework was part of the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system introduced in 1973/4 so was never used on the S2 E Type. It was used on later V12 S3s but with...

Re: Air Filter Vacuum Pipes

Hi Mark
Is or was you car an auto? If so the LR manifold upper connection goes to the vac unit at the lower LH rear of the gearbox.

Re: Mystery window regulator part

Hi Mark A couple of images which may help. If you enlarge the first it shows what looks like a foam block (hopefully closed cell). The second suggests that it is of square section. You can scale the length from the door lock handle but it looks about 4"-5"x1"x1" overall. https://i.postimg.cc/g0hZ972...

Re: Ignition switch rubber cable shroud C26851

Sorry, I should have said only early S3s with the Britax switch used C26851, not later cars which have the WASO switch.

Re: How to check Stromberg needle adjustment

Hi Job Look at the bottom of the carb. A fixed jet/adjustable needle Stromberg type will have a blanking plug (plastic or brass) in the middle. https://i.postimg.cc/NFJVPPDc/Carb-Stromberg-fixed-jet.jpg Whereas an adjustable jet/fixed needle type will look like this. https://i.postimg.cc/pVqgTpH6/Ca...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Are you following the "A" and "B" nomenclature from the S3 schematic in post #23? If so then it looks as if your "C" and the "A/B with a horizontal arrow" are the wrong way round and the expansion tank won't drain back to the main tank. It doesn't matter which of the the two outboard connections on ...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Looks like a PO tried to simplify the vent system without understanding it first. As described, as far as I can see the expansion tank is serving no purpose at all. In addition, when the main tank is full the extended filler tube inside the tank will be covered by fuel, negating the effect of the fi...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

So unless the filler cap has been replaced by the vented type, whenever the main tank level is above a certain level (vent/return C being the lowest of the 3 standard vents) either by fill level, parking nose down or braking there is no venting of the main tank.

Peter,
Sorry not my car in the picture, just used it to illustrate the panel feature. Other forum members will be able to help you with bodywork repair techniques.

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

So whereas on an an emissions car the hose transitions to the steel pipe going to the carbon cannister before going through the grommet at the back of the boot, as shown in post#21, on a non emissions car the hose is simply poked maybe an inch or so through a grommet with a bigger hole and vents int...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Thanks Colin - that's what I thought it was, an open ended tube with two wings. I have plenty of pictures of the tube part poking out of the bottom of cars, albeit of differing lengths, but only one fuzzy image of the winged top part inside. It looks the same as that originally used in the doors to ...

Re: Rear engine (manual gearbox) mount

Thanks for that Colin, at least that feature is clear now. It's a few years since I started from the "I (think) I have all the right parts but not necessarily (definitely not) in the right order" point. I had forgotten the two plain washers for an auto note in the ROM, although the PM only shows and...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Glad you got the expansion tank out without damaging it Peter. Where did the vent pipe exit the body? Would you mind posting a picture of the plastic plug fitted to the small drain hole to the right of the sump hole in the boot floor. I can't see it in your picture, I think it's hidden under some fl...

Re: Rear engine (manual gearbox) mount

Hi Colin, You are right, the arrow should point to the top spring retainer, not the gash plain washer which you can see above the retainer in my "as found" pictures in post #2, making it look rather like the STD retainer not the AUTO version which my S3 is. I would be interested to know if your reta...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Hi Philip, "D" is the outlet Jaguar designated for the expansion tank vent. The diagram shows the early type of charcoal cannister. Two restrictors, which should be about 2 inches in from the ends of hoses "A" and "B" at the main tank end, will often have been unknowingly thrown out when hoses have ...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Glad it helps. Is your car an original UK one? I know it is much modified but given that it still has an expansion tank, where does the tank vent to? On US cars the vent is via a rubber hose from the tank to a steel pipe exiting the front of the boot to a carbon cannister in the engine bay, but I wo...

Re: S3 Fuel Expansion Tank

Ho Peter,
The tank should have an insulation pad glued to it and the pad may be glued to or has stuck itself to the wheelarch.
