Re: Overdrive S3
wheelspin depends on torque and diff ratio. It also depends - very much - on flywheel mass (in case of a manual). I drove my previous S3 in two configurations (both fuel injected) : 1) low compression pre-HE with std (heavy) flywheel ; 2) 11:1 high compression HE with Fidanza light weight flywheel....

Re: newb wondering what it takes to fit a V12
What does it take to fit a V12 in an S1 FHC? Yep, you won't get much support for that idea among us on this forum. Why not get a S3 and rather spend your money on fitting a 5-sp transmission ? (this is the S3's biggest issue after a modern ignition system) I am the technical caretaker of a friend's...

Re: S1 (4.2) vs S3
for myself the 3.8 has always felt the more dynamic and racy.... I have owned quite a few Land Rover V8 engined vehicles, 3.9 Discovery 1, Discovery 2 4.0 (now converted to 4.6) and 4.6 Range Rover HSE. (I'll not mention my current 5.0L Supercharged Rangie....) The "sweetest" of them all was my sis...

Re: S1 (4.2) vs S3
going up a steep hill I put the autobox into 2 but then had to stop , started off again forgetting the trans was locked in 2 ( the same gear that was good for over 100 mph ) . No problem , it just pulled away as normal - I have (bad?) news for you Mark.... "2" on the transmission selector means : "...

Re: Webers or Fuel Injection
1. Don't do EFI. It is a long way, until it will work good. I agree. For the money and effort, rather do a 5-speed with overdrive 5th or in the very least a 2.88 diff. 3. I have 4 Stromberg on my 6,0L HE-Motor. they are working very good, the motor has a lot of power. I agree! The Strommies are exc...

Re: Hi Torque starter motor
I also agree that a reduction gear starter is one of the least urgent upgrades needed on the V12. The manual and auto also differ in teeth count BTW. Just because it SOUNDS like its turning slowly does not mean it is actually turning slowly. On my XJS as well as my EFI'ed V12 e-type I could see the ...

Re: S1 (4.2) vs S3
Well, I find the 4.2 a VERY INTERESTING engine!! (I would say even more interesting than the V12....). It certainly sets a few records in MY book: 1) It is the lowest revving PETROL engine I have ever come across - pulling strong from below 500rpm but complaining from 4k rpm onwards. I have taken to...

S1 (4.2) vs S3
I am the "technical manager" of my friend's S1 4.2. It has fallen upon me to take care of the car from a technical / maintenance perspective. When he approached me to do so, I had ONE condition: That the distributor be upgraded with a 123 Ignitions Bluetooth distributor - which I did first time I to...

Re: 4.2 Rear crank seal repair
I have a pit in my garage, so working under the car is no hassle. I cleaned around all three banjo bolts and then tightened them a smidge just for good measure, but they were rather tight already. There were signs of oiliness back against the head, but that could have come out the tach generator lon...

Also, can a sump gasket repair be done without removing that "cross brace" that also anchors the torsion bars?

Re: 4.2 Rear crank seal repair
Hi Philip...are you really sure its the rear crank seal.....check the camshaft banjo oil connections to the rear of the head...leaks here are common and run down the back.....also the rear sump gasket as mentioned above.....Steve Ah, the sump gasket..... Have not considered that possibility. Would ...

Re: 4.2 Rear crank seal repair
Thank you chaps! Its clear to me that a proper job on repairing that rear crank seal will require almost a full rebuild. Need to advise the owner accordingly.

4.2 Rear crank seal repair
Is it necessary to remove the head on a 4.2 when having to remove the crank in order to repair a rear crank seal that is leaking excessively? I am very familiar with the V12, but the 4.2 is new to me. From what I've seen it seems one has to remove the head to remove the front timing cover before you...

Re: 4.2 Suspicious sound
Note that it is best to equalise the tension on both sides of the chain which involves turning the engine backwards a little way after you have checked the tension on the exhaust side of the chain, and then readjusting to give similar tension on the inlet side Thanks for the tip!! Adjustment done. ...

Re: 4.2 Suspicious sound
Having removed the tappet cover, it seems there is a lot of play in the top cam chain. I can lift the chain away from the guide about 10mm (3/8").
I recon the first order of business it to do the procedure for tightening the top chain?

4.2 Suspicious sound
This car belongs to a friend of mine, but I’m the lucky fool who has to maintain it. Whilst waiting for the fan to come on, I realised that I hear a sound which I don’t like. Its audible all the time in the video but at 16 secs, I turn the phone’s mic towards the oil filler opening and then the susp...

Re: Webers or Fuel Injection
adding two sets of triple Webers or an injection System to improve performance and reliability. To improve reliability, only 1 thing is needed: upgrade the ignition to something modern like Lumenition etc. To improve performance, serious head and bottom end work is needed before you start spending ...

Re: Interesting Stromberg problem
Hi Philip, Thanks for posting this, my car has the same issue. I was going to check that the choke plate was in the correct orientation. Is this what you term as the enrichment valve? Now I have another thing to check, would spraying some inert gas around the valve with the engine running demonstra...

Interesting Stromberg problem
V12 RH front carb does not flow fuel via transparent pipe to rear carb even when choke (enrichment valve) is fully activated. Problem was found to be the outer valve housing that had bent due to overtightening of the two screws holding it to the carb body. This resulted in air rather than fuel being...
