Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
Thanks. I'd read somewhere that he lops off most of the crankshaft flywheel flange. That ought to give the "structural integrity" folks a terminal case of the pissy shivers. Ray Livingston points to the flange area as the primary area for stress issues (post #69).

Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
Hugo, I took Rob Beere's advice and went for his one-piece seal. It's not cheap, as you need a new flywheel. But crucially it doesn't involve reducing the dia between journal and flange. I have no doubt the original designers knew exactly what they were doing. But as Rob has successfully rebuilt hu...

Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
This is all a rehash of a J-L thread that I initiated back in 2012. The fact is I initially purchased the single split seal kit, was talked out of it by the rope seal crowd, and then took a close look at the Terry's seal. At that point I initiated a lengthy discussion about the strength/stress on th...

Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
Eric Look beyond the red mist and actually read what I wrote. Nowhere did I suggest that there are any weaknesses in any of the available designs. I just pointed out the facts with respect to available data. As an engineer, you must be familiar with product qualification methods in order to prove a...

Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
Bill Terry uses his own design in his race engines...probably the best testing regime available under the circumstances. Further, it's not like a crank seal is rocket science. Use a proven seal from a volume manufacturer and position it correctly on the crank surface. If you're concerned about the l...

Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
No need to call Bill Terry's kit a "bodge"....no need to state that the upgrades are merely attempts by suppliers to make a buck where there is no need. No need to cast aspersions on the technical merits of these retrofits using incorrect assumptions. As an engineer, I deal with facts, not opinion....

Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
Christopher Storey, post #19. I am well aware of issues with other kits. That is why I ordered and compared the two that are readily available in the US to see for myself. If you look in the archives, I have gone into specifics. Might be that Bill Terry was well aware of the issues when he engineere...

Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
Bill Terry's seal is in my car and it works perfectly. No, Mr. Storey, it's not a casting, it's a quality piece of CNC machined aluminum billet...and it's a piece of quality work. My machinist checked it against the original jaguar casting and it's spot on. No, the seal is not some no name special a...

Hugo, interesting... I also posted a response to Mr. Story's earlier post and it also evaporated....all that's left of my post is a copy of his text (above), which I had quoted. Very strange.

Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
Hugo : modern day production engineering seems to be directed exclusively towards cost reduction, and these plastic seals in modern robotic production require no fettling to fit. I have no doubt that they are practical if designed as an integral part of a production engine. My objection to these "a...

Re: Crankshaft rear oil seal
I physically evaluated the split seal kits from SNG and from Terry's Jaguar. The odds of making an installation error with the clamshell type design (SNG and XKS) is high. After speaking with Bill Terry at his race engine shop, I selected his design. He puts it in all of his high horse power stroker...

Re: 4.2 rebuild
I used the lip seal from Bill Terry (Terry's Jaguar Parts), which is of a different design than the more common clamshell/spring design. I had both kits in hand before making the selection. Mr. Terry's kit goes in all of his high dollar/high horsepower race engines. The one in my engine has absolute...

I sense that the issue is associated only with Hall effect trigger systems, and not optical trigger electronic ignition designs.

Re: Photobucket - Warning, do not use
Off topic for a moment, but Gerry, I have to say that is one gorgeous car you have. The rear 3/4 angle is the best view of an fhc in my book - it's what you see when one overtakes you.... Again off topic....but it's the wheel/tire combination that gives it the balanced and aggressive look. Very nic...

Re: Rusty fuel issues! Part 1
I believe the inside of the tank on my car was galvanized. When inspected it showed only limited areas of rust. Since I wanted to preserve as much of the galvanized surface as possible, I decided against using an abrasive inside the tank. So I went the chemical route with a highly alkaline cleaner a...

Re: Engine not revving. Now running fine
ETTony : it is not the vacuum advance which you need to worry about . It is the MECHANICAL advance mechanism which may be seized i.e. the bob weights attached to the central spindle . The first check you can make - without removing the distributor from the car - is to take hold of the distributor s...
