Re: 9 Months Gone Missing

Mine built Feb, delivered March, registered October. No known reason. Possible reasons:- Car being used as demonstrator driven for a while under trade plates. Damage in transit, repairs required. Car driven by owner of retailer under trade plates. Unfancied original colour combination. Waiting list ...

Re: Torque wrench accuracy

"Presumably the spring balance is suitably calibrated" Of course, by the 1kg weight I'd previously suspended from it. And that 1kg weight was calibrated on the kitchen scales. And the kitchen scales were calibrated using a 1 litre jug of water. And the jug of water was calibrated by suspending it fr...

Re: Torque wrench accuracy

Important advice in the above that I always follow - untension the wrench when finished.

I occasionally check the calibration using a spring balance pulling on the handle while the square drive is anchored in a vice. Simple and effective.

Re: Lazy Starting

Mine is always slower to start after a week or two than if I try after just after days. It ain't the fuel, nor is it sparks or compression.

I blame them gremlins.

Re: Just joined

The best colour for the interior, especially with dark silver metallic paint, is light grey. IMHO. Light grey with contrasting piping.

Re: Worst plugs ever seen?

Two stroke oil in a four stroke? Nah! Not a good idea. Of those "benefits" listed above, most are imagined. If you have carbon on the valves or pistons using today's petrol, the engine is running rich. Adding oil to the petrol will not improve that. If you have carbon behind the rings you have a wor...

No lockwire and stubborn bolts? Sounds like someone used locktite instead of lockwire.

Re: Jaguar Heritage Certificate

The body number might be an issue. On mine the tag was missing. But I did find a crayon mark inside the rear hatch. That was the only one not obliterated by the many resprays the car has had. Four at least.

Re: Castor adjustment

I used a plumb line (and basic trig) hanging close to the top and bottom ball joints with the car on a level surface. It is accurate enough to set each side to within manufacturers tolerances.

Re: Worst plugs ever seen?

I once owned a CZ motorcycle that ate its spark plug. There was only one and when the central electrode had worn so far it would no longer spark the engine died. So I carried a spare two plugs with me at all times. This was not a unique phenomenon. Early Kawasaki triples also had an appetite for plu...

Re: Best engine oil??

Loads of threads on this subject. I use my car a lot, and always use semi-synthetic oil formulated for Jags and Astons with flat tappets. It is only marginally more expensive than cooking multi-grade. More important than what oil, is to change it regularly. Change oil every year or 3000 miles, which...

Re: 860005 1600HP S1 FHC 24Aug61

Whilst I can see the pleasure in owning a car that will never be used in the manner originally intended (driven hard and fast and then sold when something faster comes along) it is not something I would do. I prefer my card to be used. I have a daily driver, plus a S2000 and the E both of which do a...

Re: Another 12 months, another MOT

It should be pointed out that my car is a long way from its most recent refurbishment, and it has never been properly restored. I'm not sure I'd be happy driving it as I do if it had just been restored.
