Re: OIL CAPCACITY OF 1971 S2, 4.2, 2+2
Thank you, guys. I'm out of town taking care of my Mom after having surgery but when I get home I will check out that dipstick. I only cranked the engine for a few seconds so I hope I don't have the issues you described, Steve. There is a new fuel pump from SNG waiting for me at home so when I get h...

Re: OIL CAPCACITY OF 1971 S2, 4.2, 2+2
Thanks Steve and Chris: I checked the dipstick and it is straight and goes all the way in to the stopper on the stick. It still reads just above the "E" on the bottom of the stick. So I drained all the oil and there was actually close to 10 quarts in there instead of the required 9 (18 pints). Would...

Re: OIL FILTER LEAKING ON 1971 S2, 4.2, 2+2
Thanks, Steve. I'm going to check that dipstick tomorrow and make sure it's perfectly straight. I did put exactly 18 pints into the car when I changed the oil and filter so I now that the amount is correct. But when I recently tried to start the car after sitting for 6 years it started dripping oil ...

OIL CAPCACITY OF 1971 S2, 4.2, 2+2
Does anyone know the correct oil capacity of a 1971 Series 2, 4.2, 2 + 2 with the oil filter on ? Everything I read say 18 pints (9 US quarts), but my dipstick still reads at the "E" level and the car is on level ground in the garage.
Thanks,
Mike
Thanks,
Mike

Re: STARTING CAR WITH FUEL SYSTEM COMPLETELY DRY...
Hi Simon, I tried tapping on the pump to get it going and nothing happened. I again tested the wires to the pump and there is 12.8 volts power when the ignition is turned on and the wires to the pump are connected correctly. I just removed the pump and it was completely dry. So I will be getting a n...

Re: STARTING CAR WITH FUEL SYSTEM COMPLETELY DRY...
Hi Simon, I'm going to give that a try tomorrow with the screwdriver. Also, do you know which terminal on the unit is the earth (ground) ? Mine has one terminal in the rear and one in the front. I'm wondering of the previous owner disconnected it and reconnected the wires incorrectly because it was ...

Re: STARTING CAR WITH FUEL SYSTEM COMPLETELY DRY...
Well, I tried starting the car today. When I turned the key on there was no noise from the fuel pump at all. I tried cranking it a bit and even though then engine turned over there was no fuel in the glass bowl. I checked the power to the fuel pump with a tester and there was 12 volts. So I think th...

STARTING CAR WITH FUEL SYSTEM COMPLETELY DRY...
My half restored E type that I just acquired from a restorer hasn't run in 6 years but it was "running when parked". The fuel system is now completely dry. I've changed all the filters, put fuel in it, and want to try starting it up. Do I need to prime the fuel system and/or fuel pump in any way or ...

Re: FILTER ON FUEL PICK UP TUBE IN SUMP
For anyone who runs into this problem, I had to gradually enlarge the entrance to the filter with a drill to 3/8 inch in order to get the fuel filler pipe to fit it. Drill very slowly and and as you feel the drill start to grab stop it or it will draw itself into the filter and puncture it. I notifi...

Re: FILTER ON FUEL PICK UP TUBE IN SUMP
Hi Steve, I have the same problem. The one I just got from Barratts (USA) is too big for the pick up tube to go in all the way. I was thinking of making it bigger with a drill like you or just cutting a half inch off the pick ups tube so it will fit inside the sump. Apparently the manufacturer hasn'...

FILTER ON FUEL PICK UP TUBE IN SUMP
Hi Gents, Does anyone know how far the fuel pick up tube is supposed to go into the fuel filter that sits inside the fuel sump ? I just got a new one from Barratts because there was none there previously. The tube will only go in about half an inch and I'm worried that there won't be enough room for...

Re: Fuel tank sump removal
Hi Steve,
The guy at SNG Barratts (USA) suggested that I use a fiber washer instead of the rubber one so that's what I have. Thanks !

Thanks, Tom. I looked up that number on Barratts and it said the part is "unavailable". I will have to call them tomorrow and see it they have a replacement.
Thank you,
Mike

Re: Fuel tank sump removal
Yes, Tom. Even though I don't know much about these cars at the moment, that would make sense considering the primary spring is on the bulkhead. Thanks again for your help !

Re: Fuel tank sump removal
Tom, Here is a picture of the spring on the carburetor that I'm talking about. The one one the bulkhead is fine. I got one from the local hardware store that is most similar to the broken one until I can find out for sure which one from Barratts is the correct one as they have a few on there. So is ...

Re: Fuel tank sump removal
I got the sump off today and was surprised that it came off quite easily with a 1 foot breaker bar. It was completely full of rust and other debris. Should there be some kind of filter on the pick up tube because there was nothing there ? Also, does anyone have a picture of what I think is the throt...

Re: Fuel tank sump removal
Okay, thanks a lot, Tom. I have the "E-Type Owner's Workshop Manual" by Kenneth Ball and "The Complete Official Jaguar "E"" by Robert Bentley. Can you suggest a better one ? I do have the "glass bowl" on the car which filter I am waiting for a replacement from SNG Barratt. Do you suggest removing th...
