Thank you Steve, my mistake.
So definitely "hot" bonnet in nominal use...

Re: How hot should it run
I agree with Malcolm.
After a drive, my bonnet is also more warm than hot.
No issues to put hands on it although the engine and cooling circuit hav reached "hot" temperatures.

Re: How hot should it run
I would not advise opening the header tank when it's hot, risks of boiling water projections! To have a rather accurate reading of hot surfaces with an IR gun, you better shoot on a black textured surface, e.g. the engine block, avoiding exhausts proximity. Shooting on the black rad itself (look at ...

Re: Soft top rear chrome trim profile
Interesting. The labels on the amendment of E/122/1 are also 20xx, hence they appeared to have been so from that amendment until E/122/6 at least. And only E/122/1 had figures with labels 18xx. The text in E/122/1: "Clip the four hooks under the chromium hood fastener strips " is also different from...

Re: Soft top rear chrome trim profile
I just checked the picture of installation of the hood cover on the owners manual E/122/3 (I have an original of it). Funnyly, it still shows the same picture (now numbered fig. 29) as in the amendment of E/122/1, while E/122/3 was provided from May 1963 onwards. It is likely though that hook plates...

If it can help, here is the picture I took of the connection when I dismantled the rear light trim for repainting my 3.8 FHC:

Re: Soft top rear chrome trim profile
David, I have found that there is a mention and a picture showing the rear chrome strip without the hook plates BD.20658 in the rare 8 page 'Amendments and Additions' booklet, supplied from August 1961 updating the E/122/1 Owners Handbook, until April 1962 when edition E/122/2 was provided. I am luc...

Re: Esso E5 Ethanol Free to end
In the EU, the best gas available is so called SP 98 E5, which is gas blended with up to 5% ethanol.
People use this in classic cars with no major issues.

Re: 215 rear 185 front ?
205/70 on the rear would already be ample enough and would decrease the cons mentioned by chrisfell.
But sure the handling will be seriously affected

Re: Trolley jack safety
Unfortunately, no component will be 100% safe, even if having passed successfully quality control and tests. There are many stories of stand axles breaking at welding points, plastic car ramps crashing, hydraulic jacks or lifts failing... The rule imho is to double/triple safety measures, e.g. alway...

Re: Oil Pressure Relief Valve
As Steve says. All the filter housings for the XK engine have (or should have unless lost) such a plate. oil filter housings.jpg Otherwise the oil would enter and exit the housing by using the easiest low pressure path, which means not going through the filter. Btw, on my 3.8 FHC the plate was lost ...

Soft top rear chrome trim profile
Hi everybody, A question for people knowing well early 3.8 series 1 OTS (OBL and early non OBL). I have been surprised to discover a "squared" profile of the trim in subject as shown by Chuck in one of his videos relating to an OBL OTS, car number 8751.. built/dispatched in June 1961. https://www.yo...

Re: Header tank: Aluminium, brass or stainless steel?
Thank you Danny. You confirm possible issues with refabricated steel tanks. Your Cambridge Motor Sports tank is superb. High price though and not the original look, more D-Type like and well in line with the engine head. I have been looking for alloy header tanks with the same design than that of th...
