James : the S2 tacho ( assuming it is an original one ) is an impulse instrument which works by counting the ignition pulses. It sense these by the two coils of white wire which are looped at the back of the instrument and which lead from the ignition switch to the coil and indeed provide the feed t...

Altitude should not affect timing in any way. What is does do, of course, is affect mixture strength considerably, and the thing to beware of is if your carbs are setup for your present altitude . If that is substantially in excess of 1000metres / 3000 feet , say 1500 metres /5000 feet and upwards a...

Sam : you need to understand that there is no connection at all between BAS in North America, and BAS in UK . The recommendation, which I endorse heartily, is for that in the UK .

I have been using Andy Rayner's ( Hutson's ) stuff which has a German name which I cannot remember , with Paper gaskets , and have been completely leak free as a result. It also has the advantage of coming in a tube with a key on the bottom which makes it easy to squeeze out accurately . Highly reco...

Don't be non-plussed. The tensioner operates on that length of chain which naturally lies between the sprockets . When it is turned it moves eccentrically downwards to increase the distance that the chain travels between the sprockets . Unless in so doing it moves a camshaft ( which ideally it shoul...

Well, it was sufficient to put Andy off supplying the double electronic ones . As you know, he is not someone who likes things to go wrong, particularly spectacularly, which this was . Even the housing had melted

I drove my Standard Pennant home to Cheshire from the top of the M1 without a gear lever , stuck in top gear ! It involved going round roundabouts several times until one could achieve escape velocity, slowing down for traffic lights in the hope they would go green as one got there etc. The moral to...

I should have a word with Vernon Bros Electroplating at Heckmondwike, who I can certainly recommend for e.g. chrome plating . I had my suspension parts done ( in the Midlands ) in Zinc-Nickel which is the latest compound technology, but it does produce a purpley tinged silver finish which is not to ...

When you say the original spacer is not thick enough do you mean that you have no hub end float, or that you have too much ? If you have too much end float , you need a thinner spacer not a thicker one . If this is the case, measure your end float with this spacer in position , deduct .004 inch ( 0....

I do hope that the purchaser of "850038" has got what he thinks he has purchased. The story told under this number in the catalogue - see xkedata - is unusual , not least because the " big freeze" did not take place in 1963/64 - this being an important part of the story - but in 1962/63 . Furthermor...

I am afraid this is probably the result of someone doing MOT testing who has no experience of cars of this age. The prescribed wheel bearing end float ( AND NOT PRELOAD AS MANY MODERN CARS HAVE ) is 2 to 6 thou at the bearing . By the time this is translated to the outer diameter it will be many tim...

But, the Mossbox uses straight 30 and not a hypoid EP oil !

Incidentally, years ago on leyland 77mm 5 speed boxes ( Rover 3500 etc ) a standard fix for extreme notchiness when cold was to use ATF instead of gearbox oil
