Re: Wiring Harness Fabric Cover Frayed
I always use Tesa 51026 tape to replace the covering on under bonnet loom wiring (and elsewhere). It is the correct high temperature tape for the job and makes for a very neat finish. Just be warned that it sticks so easily to nitrile gloves that this is a job best done bare-handed, and just use Swa...

Re: Engine & Gearbox swap 66 E type 2+2 automatic
Jan, I hope all well and the trials and tribulations of dealing with ASI have not worn you down too much. If I may resurrect this thread, I'm several months behind you on restoring my 1966 2+2 but have now sourced a XJ6 SIII engine and auto gearbox, and will be following Peter Crespin's advice from ...

Re: Cadmium plating
That news is interesting, thank you. I have bits of my 60s-era Garrard turntable that I am refurbishing that no Garrard specialist will redo with the original cadmium, although it would appear that to do so would actually be legal. I'm inclined to look further afield on principle as, even in these H...

Re: Has anybody fitted a J60 engine to a Series 1?
Thank you, both. Yes, I fully agree that an XJ6 or 420G engine and gearbox would be an easier proposition in principle. It's just that I think I trust the REME a bit more than whoever ran most of the junkers out there for the last fifteen years! Just surmise but, from my dealings with the Army, I th...

Has anybody fitted a J60 engine to a Series 1?
I hope you might be able to help. I have tried searching the forum but have not come up with anything on point. I am restoring a 1966 Series 1 E-type that was 'lumped' with a Chevy SBC and I want to revert the car to a Jaguar unit and gearbox. As it is a humble 2+2, it is unlikely to be worth paying...

Re: Electric power steering
Go and search one of the e-type club magazines for an article by Rod Shears on this subject. He has fitted electric steering to a number of Jaguar cars and I think the donor parts were from a old Maestro. Total cost will leave you with £1800 more in your pocket than if you go down the £2000 route m...

Re: Electric power steering
I've been trying to keep this comment to myself, by I cant keep it in any longer. Protein shakes and working out with weights is cheaper, and the benefits can be used elsewhere. While that is certainly true for me, my wife, for one, would object to having to develop arms like a navvy's sim...
Re: Speeding
I have no problem with speed limits, no problem with radar traps, hidden or in plain sight, no problem with mobile cameras or average speed camera setups. If I am caught breaking the speed limits it is my fault entirely not someone else of the system trying to extract cash from me. As for France, I...
Re: Speeding
2 years ago I was “caught“ twice in 10 minutes near Lyon. 92 and 93 kph in a 90....really! I have vowed never to return to France as a result. I would feel on edge about infringing the limit all the time and therefore would be distracted while driving (especially as sometimes it’s difficult to know...

Re: Steering wheel and gear stick restoration
Make sure it is pure Tung oil. A lot that is sold is a mixture and not half as pleasant underhand.
I used Tung oil on my Momo wheel on my Alfa Spider. It is a nice wheel to use now.

. I suspect BL production standards and QC (or lack of it) had more of a hand in it.

If it's any consolation, that happened to my mother back in 1975 in her Morris Marina Coupé, so your E-Type is in august company !

Re: Help wanted - Problem with registering in Italy - Mangoletsi Jenvey modifications
Jan, Understood. Sure, if you can get the Italian documents, that would be best by a mile. Mimicking true Italian style, I was just voicing a work-around . I have known Italians and UK ex-pats who have had UK plated cars for years and who have insured them (as non-residents) with UK insurers bu...

Re: Do not open windows....
Bernie, I recall reading something a while back about such a sign on one of the US car forums but I can't for the life of me remember which one. And I thought it was over 140 mph! The sign was allegedly attached above the rear view mirror in a Primrose coupe (Series 2?) IIRC. That might help you hun...

Andrew, I'm so sorry to hear of your illness but pleased to hear of the coverage. It must be a bit of a morale boost. I'll get my son to pop out and get a copy for my return. I think PC is one of those English titles that is translated more or less verbatim into Italian and with the original photos ...

Re: Help wanted - Problem with registering in Italy - Mangoletsi Jenvey modifications
SNIP FOR BREVITY Nor did I consider registering the car in the UK even if the registration procedures seem easier, because once I want to bring the car to Italy, I would have to go through the above mentioned procedures anyway since the modifications would not be homologated as for the TUV process....

Re: VIN number
Yves, The French are highly accomplished at rugby, as well as "soccer". It is another game played with a similarly shaped ball to American Football but with minimal protection. I know nothing much about American Football so I'll keep quiet on its virtues and vices. Apart from the excitement of watch...

Re: VIN number
soccer ball ? :wow: Soccer ball?! The only people in the English-speaking world who use the term "soccer" for the Association variant of football are the Americans and a dwindling band of rather elderly British ex-public schoolboys (who use it as opposed to "rugger" which is, after all, the proper ...
