Re: Intermittent electrical quirks
Ah yes, I wondered that, but I thought ( naively because there really isn't room in an E type's doors ) it must be an aftermarket job

Re: Intermittent electrical quirks
The first thing I would look for is a grounding ( earthing) problem . The E type abounds with small earth wires - all of which are black - but is heavily dependent upon the main earth leads between battery and the main bodyshell . I would check all the leads at each end for freedom from corrosion an...

No wonder Norman Dewis was nearly late if he was using that as a map !! Too much artistic licence in the last 100 kms perhaps ? Also, Geneva is shown where Lausanne is in reality !

Re: The William Lyons history
I have brought this thread back to life because in today's Jaguar Enthusiast magazine there is a rather self congratulatory write up about it by the people who have designed it, and I wondered whether the reservations which we all had about it are shared by others, or whether more computer literate ...

Re: Hello From LA and the one and only unique LDR Jaguar -- Video :)
So, it's yet another special, but I am sorry, it doesn't please me. The detailing is horribly fussy, the rivets look very amateurish and spoil the lines, - and do they have any purpose? - and I haven't the faintest idea what the supposed connection with the Lindner/ Nocker is

Re: Rattling top end. HEEEELP
The other thing that can give rise to noise of a variable nature is a timing chain tensioner problem . next time it rattles, stop immediately and check the tension on the upper chain - it only involves removal of the front dome and the filter screen behind it . The lower chain is tensioned by a slip...

Re: Rattling top end. HEEEELP
What you have not mentioned is any replacement of the tappets and/or tappet guides themselves . What happens is that with extensive use the tappet buckets can become barrel shaped and rock in the guides , producing a clicking sound . The first thing I would do is to remove the camshafts and carefull...

Re: Valve clearances
There are only four which are outside the specification , and these only by 1 thou . Frankly, I regard it as impossible to measure accurately to 1 thou, ( particularly if not all the valve gear such as buckets , bucket guides etc have been replaced) , and my advice would be to leave well alone unles...

Re: 4.2 Engine cuts erratically
From the photo, that is most definitely not a usual rotor arm, and the distributor looks very different from standard - it might even not be a Lucas one. before you order anything, I think you need to establish the exact specification of what you are running

Re: Bad oil leak - possibly from Oil Sender/Warning Light Switch(es)?
So (fingers crossed) a new switch will sort things out. But I have been reading on this site about advantages of converting to a mechanical oil pressure switch etc and at the same time getting things up on top of the engine rather than in the incredibly difficult area they are in currently (early S...

Re: Possible bent valve stem causing engine to lock up
Brass shim is definitely not a thrust washer . The thrust washers are indeed semi-circular, with the circles' inner diameter coinciding with the main journal diameter, and are steel , faced with lead-indium or similar bearing material, with an overall thickness of perhaps 50 or 60 thou , and ( I am ...

Re: Possible bent valve stem causing engine to lock up
Oh dear ! First thing to do is to remove the cam covers and check for i.timing chains in place and correctly tensioned and ii. that each valve is where you would expect it to be .Since you cannot rotate the engine at present this will require some careful planning and a cool head to decide whether a...

Re: 4.2 Engine cuts erratically
Also, check the rotor arm : many of these become conductive with heat and as a result short out to the rotor shaft . With a small drop in temperature , they become non-conductive again and the engine will start and run for a few minutes. A means of testing for this is to insert a layer or better sti...

Re: What to look for in a series 2 fhc
The real snag to US imports is that almost invariably they come with the 3.54 diff ( which provided stupendous acceleration from rest but reflected the 55 mph speed limit which was widespread in the US at the time) and which also results in ridiculously lower speeds in the gears . Also as already no...

Re: trie size (again) 67 fhc
These are far too small . The correct size radial on an S1 or S2 car is 185VR15 which is an 80% ( with some manufacturers 82%) profile. The gives a diameter of between 681 and 685 mm. The 195/65 gives a diameter of 634.5mm, and thus a radius up to 25mm smaller than the correct tire which will lower t...

Re: air horns where they factory accessories ?
Just one thing you should know is that horns which played other than a single note or chord ( i.e. twin tones sounded simiultaneously were OK ) became illegal in the UK ( and in all probablility in all EU countries )from about the mid 1990s onwards

Re: 1965 FHC on a Rotisserie Jig
I suggest you ask Andy Rayner at Hutsons 01274 669052 whether this is possible . They certainly did not do it with my FHC ( I've just looked at the photos) but I think it would be possible , although you would probably need to make some jig to attach the front swivel to the steel of the picture fram...
