Re: car dies and no spark
Hi Kim. Next time you have the failure, try cooling the OPUS ignition amplifier (the ribbed box connected to the distributor and located either in the vee of the engine or on the front upper frame) using a bag of frozen peas or similar. If it works, then likely the Amplifier has gone past its best a...

Re: Turn signal relay
Hi Steve, On an RHD car, the flasher unit for both turn indicators and hazard lights is located just above and inboard the door hinge and bonnet release behind the dashboard. Not sure if it's a mirror image on US/LHD cars, but I think it's likely. https://i.postimg.cc/Gm8GwfsT/406-Behind-dash-29.jpg...

Hi Dick, Yes, I found that out shortly after posting that reply, which is why I said the Lucas pump might be original. Anyway, on discovery, I bought this: https://i.postimg.cc/ZYsSDcnt/B42-C383-F-F5-D8-42-A9-938-C-25753-F366595.jpg Thanks for the reply and correction. Sorry if I misled anyone, the ...

Re: Vacuum retard distributor
Hi Phil, When I spoke to British Vacuum, here’s the answer regarding where to drill the ported manifold hole. Note I have a V12, so it could be different, but I doubt it. Several months later, I plucked up the courage and drilled it myself, using a Dremel type tool. My hole is a little larger than r...

Re: windscreen washer pump
I just found that there is also a Trico pump fitted to some cars, not sure if the Lucas one is actually original, but I think it was on some cars.
Anyway, I hope that was all helpful.

Simon.

Re: windscreen washer pump
Hi Sven, I had this issue and bought a replacement pump from one of the usual suppliers, only to find not only that it didn't look right - plastic instead of metal body, but it didn't work - the internal design was not up to keeping the water in the pipe after the pump, before the jet. On a Series 3...

Re: Vacum retard - again
Hi, I recently changed to ported vacuum advance, however my efforts to decide which was better was thwarted by the discovery there were other issues with the ignition and tuning of the car prior to the change. However, I am happy with the results. I use a Re-opus system in place of the original, thi...

Re: Restoration finish of suspension wishbones
Well, I was told they were plated on all E-types, including the Series 3. I took mine to be plated and he refused, saying that they would not take plating well. I argued, but to no avail. Looking by, I could have gone elsewhere, but instead, I de rusted thoroughly, using a dip, then primed and paint...

Re: Power Steering Hose Bracket Location
Hi Andrew, There was nothing specifically locating the pinion end of the hoses on my car, but I did find that adjustment of the angle that the pipes had was advisable on fitting. To achieve this, simply fit the unions, but not too tightly, then manipulate the pipes (including at the end where you ar...

Re: Power Steering Hose Bracket Location
Hi Andrew, Greetings from down under, good to hear from you. Here’s some photos, a bit difficult to photograph in the depths of the engine bay! I have a rad cap overflow pipe running down and trapped between my two pipes, so don’t be put off by the thin black rubber pipe. The Union on top of the rac...

Re: Car radio
The space is hollow, so you have the whole rear wing behind there. I doubt there is a larger hollow space in the car, probably bigger than the space behind the door trim. For more bass you will need a sub woofer under a seat or one of the modern custom units which would look pretty out of place. Simon

Fit a hard top? I fell in love with the E-type shape through a series 1 OTS, fitted with a factory hard top. Then it’s definitely a coupe.

Hi Colin, Welcome, where are you in Aus? I have a similar car, also brought over from UK. I did very similar work, by the sound of it. As to starting a thread, you have already done that by starting this one. Start a restoration thread in the restoration area and post to it where you have progress t...
