Hi Simon,
Thanks for your reply.
Could let let me know where you sourced your head studs.I’m in a frame of mind to replace all of mine.
SNG ?
Some of the threads look knackered anyway.
Thanks
Tim

Re: Head studs
Thanks Andrew, I’ve got that. My question is why don’t I have a shouldered stud? My only thoughts are that the head has been off before and someone has used an incorrect stud. On another post I mentioned that the camshaft bolts did not have wire locking which possibly adds weight to the thoughts tha...

Re: Head studs
Thanks Simon,
The picture is clear,
My issue is that I have 4 of the longer studs none of which show the shoulder !
Tim
Once I get the block cleaned up I’ll insert them and post a picture

Head studs
Hi all, As part of my cylinder head overhaul I’ve removed all of the studs from the block so that I can throughly clean the surface and prepare. This is a short stud block. With all of the studs out and unfortunately I didn’t note which position each came from, I can see that that I have the 4 longe...

Re: Utmost joy tonight
Hi Geoff,
No, I’ve not bought one of those but given that it’s design by Rory I would guess that it’s a good bit of kit.

Re: Utmost joy tonight
Update, The head is now with CMES for overhaul,I’m impressed what I’ve seen of the operation and will post once it’s back. I’ve bought one of their multi layer head gaskets as recommended. On looking at the pistons and block I’m feeling good about these. The pistons seem in good condition and with a...

Re: Utmost joy tonight
Hi Geoff, I’m more relaxed about the piston height now I’ve been able get a better view. Pleased that I will be rid of the scalloped cam drives. Working through the head studs which are being a sod to remove, I’m using my (inherited from my dad) stud remover. No cracks between the bores which I was ...

Re: Utmost joy tonight
The head is now off and once again it didn’t give up without a struggle. This is a short stud block but the studs still show corrosion where the alloy has interacted with the steel. It would have been nigh on impossible for 1 man and probably 2 to lift this off. I used one of those cheap winches off...

The biscuit tin !
Do any of forum members have an old biscuit tin ( or 2) in the garage/ workshop full of surplus/ sundry/ used nuts, bolts, things which you occasionally scrabble through looking for that seldom needed item. I’ve got a couple and know that I really should just junk them but they have got me out of tr...

Re: Utmost joy tonight
Hi Steve, I’m afraid I’m susceptible to shipwrights disease (!) afraid this may end up as a virtual engine rebuild. If I push the pistons out then I may as well do the big ends, oil pump , thrust washers etc. If I’ve got the sump and head off then may as well have a look at the timing chains……….. I ...

Re: Utmost joy tonight
Thanks both,
Simon, mine appear significantly further down the bore than yours. Difficult to absolutely certain as the head is still in place ( half way up the studs) I will see more once the head is off.

Re: Utmost joy tonight
So the work continues. The manifolds are off and the camshaft drives all undone. As noted a bit earlier the camshaft bolts were missing the lockwire but had been tightened by a gorilla. No sign of loctite on these which surprised me a bit. I spent about a week dripping plus gas down the head studs w...

Re: Utmost joy tonight
For those that may be reading this pointless thread I am pleased to report that the manifold finally gave up the unequal fight and is now resting with sorrow on the workbench ! It was a struggle. Finally helped I think by using a couple of those small plastic wedges normally found for tiling and flo...

Re: Utmost joy tonight
Had crossed my mind as well.
Will see once the bolts are removed- traces of loctite will be visible.

Re: Utmost joy tonight
Thanks Randall, Unfortunately my joy was short lived. O Although the manifold gasket had become away from joint the manifold remains resolutely unwilling to come away. It’s clearly very loose on the lower studs but won’t make the final journey to the work bench ! I thought that I had it solved by re...

Utmost joy tonight
After a day of fighting with it, wrestling with it, swearing at it and generally abusing it.
The inlet manifold gasket gave up and succumbed to the inevitable greater force.

When Alan Slawson rebuilt my diff he was adamant the the castrol oil noted above must be used.
He knows more than me so I followed his advice.
