Re: Serious miss
Surely the receipt will say what was purchased, diesel is the most expensive as well. Too much speculation here. How much fuel was added as well. I'm wondering if perhaps it was just a contaminated batch of basic unleaded and the car has been set up for premium unleaded although it shouldn't be that...

Re: Changing a clutch a 9 to 5 job !
I have just realised that I previously contributed to this subject on your link. I suppose I didn't realise that disconnecting the engine mounts and jacking the engine up with all cooling and other ancillaries connected would have this effect. Ah well-Job done anyway. All this talk might help someon...

Re: Changing a clutch a 9 to 5 job !
Just to finally clarify for anyone wishing to perform this procedure on a V12. The reason why you have to take out all the bolts of the pressure plate whilst inside the separated open bell housing is that the whole bell housing is jammed in by the tunnel and pressure plate. Once the pressure plate a...

Re: Changing a clutch a 9 to 5 job !
I have replaced the whole clutch assembly on my V12 car without removing the engine and without any butchering but it's a pig of a job. Even had gearbox reconditioned at same time. Remove/drop down IRS for prop shaft slide back. Once you slide back the bell housing you can loosen the individual pres...

Re: Series 3 spark plugs colours
I know I'm a bit late to this topic but balanced my carbs by using a Stromberg air flow meter, four Coloutrtunes (one in centre plug of each carb bank.) and a needle mixture adjusting tool that goes into the top of the dashpot. The Colourtunes had a good effect of identifying a lazy carb at tick ove...
Re: Sunroof
Sorry but disagree, Had a Webasto on mine since fairly new. Completely re skinned in the nineties with new blue vinyl to match paint. Never leaked a drop. Big Webasto deflector removes all buffeting at motorway speeds. On hot days really great as we don't have air con on UK cars. Younger generation ...

Re: Door mirrors
Long stem Tex mirrors work well although I have non descript Paddy Hopkirk mirrors fitted on mine years ago. What I would say that driving in todays traffic conditions it is suicidal not having door mirrors. I tried it on another classic car and talk about people creeping up on your inside these days.

Re: thicker Moto-Lita steering wheel
I know it's each to their own but I fitted this Mota Lita wheel in for 40 years ago and still think it looks great. Original wheel was missing although I do agree they do still look good. Note oil temperature gauge and manual fan over ride switch and tell tale light plus rear fog light switch and li...

Re: V12 sereis 3 Exhaust ..straight or std?
Personally keep it original preferably stainless with rear box and 4 flute tail pipe. (the twins were naff)
A complete stainless system is quite noisy anyway as the original mild steel pipes were partly double skinned if I remember rightly.

This must be an air con spec car as in the UK we didn't air con and only a fan in the heater box.

Fuel vapour Lock
S3 V12 FHC 1972 Manual. Been very hot today. After a good run the car starts and dies. Impossible to restart. Ignition electrics replaced so I'm sure it's not them. Been using the cheapest fuel which has loads of Ethanol. This boils and vaporises at about 100 deg. C. I suspect the fuel vapour locks ...

Re: Vacuum Pipes on series 3
The by pass valves or anti pop valves have an adjuster that can be found under the brass plugs, that I have removed. Assuming the diaphragms are intact and the gaskets sealed you can crank them up as opposed to blanking them. I used a syringe and vacuum gauges to get an idea of what vacuum they were...

Re: Vacuum Pipes on series 3
I had mentioned on other posts that I still have a retard unit. I have replaced these more than once due to diaphragm perforating. There's a lot of cheap replicas out there so keep a check on them. I had considered advance unit but don't have the tapping next to the butterfly so decided against it b...

Re: How to adjust mixture
Moss sell a generic jet adjusting tool very cheap, probably for Triumph or Rover. Mixture can only be done when all the other rubbish around the Strombergs is sorted. This consists of either adjusting or disabling the temperature bi metallic control valves(covered elsewhere} and cranking up the anti...

Re: Running Temperature etc
Have owned car for 39 years, Done all cooling mods including high flow radiator, multiblade fans and replacement otter and gauge sender, thermostats the lot. My fans kick in on the L although I have a bypass for traffic, Helps cool the carburettors and dump out the heat. On motorway stays on the R b...

Re: Gearbox removal with engine in situ
I have done it on my V12 S3 FHC Manual. I once posted this on Jag Lovers. From memory main points but the main obstacle is getting the bell housing past the clutch assembly Drop rear end down low enough to enable prop shaft to be slid back. Remove exhaust but leave downpipes Remove all interior gear...

Re: Overheating
I had terrible problems with this. Solved issue by firstly fitting a high flow radiator core, more guts. Made sure all hoses were unblocked, found remnants of BARS leaks slug in vertical hose behind radiator. Multi blade fans (debated already) and finally those damned temperature control valves on t...

Re: opus ignition system
What I don't like about the SNG system is that you have to relinquish your existing stuff including distributor. (Desperate measures at desperate times I suppose) I some years back managed to get a Crane XR 700 if I remember rightly to work great with some fettling. You discard the OPUS and put in a...

Re: Oil Pressure Advice
I don't believe the oil was ever the problem. I ran my V!2 on Halfords blue own brand for years with no problem. I'm suspecting grit under the relief valve had it passing or that notorious sender unit that in another post a David Manners replacement worked great. The oil solution is just too good to...
