Re: Series 3, go on persuade me!

I have kept extensive fuel consumption records (standard UK V12 with auto) - best 17mpg (Portsmouth to Dover) - worst was 11mpg - around town in downtown Sydney. Overall average and typical is 14mpg. For everyday use stay with a 3.07 diff, 2.88 for a cruiser or the 3.5? diff ratios - I changed my au...

I agree with Andrew - is weeping brake fluid that has dried out and crystallised.

Re: Confused.com

I believe the LHD cars were produced before the RHD cars - I have the 11th RHD convertible and it was not built until Aug 71 and it would seem that production of RHD convertibles started around Jul 71 with LHD cars much earlier.

Re: Diff ratios

The Salsbury is in lots of different vehicles and as mentioned many of the internal components are interchangeable with Dana diff. My Landrover has a 5.57:1 sals diff ratio and the crown wheel and pinion would probably fit inside my S3 etype diff - so there are other options - Dana diffs have an eve...

Re: Removing the S3 bonnet?

With a little planning I can remove my bonnet by myself. But as mentioned you really do not need to take the bonnet off to get at most areas around the engine - you just need to remove the gas strut and lift the bonnet to the vertical position and then supporting it. Depending on your front ride hei...

Re: Oil pressure dilemma in V12

I would agree with Julian - the fact that pressure does come up indicates to me a measurement issue. You haven't mentioned what is happening with the oil pressure light - if it is staying off then definitely a gauge issue. As an aside - you have a new engine why have to you chosen to use 20/50 oil r...

Re: Private Messages - stuck in Outbox but not in sent box

They sit in your outbox until opened by the recipient then they move to the sent box - this way you know if the message has been opened.

If it stays in your Outbox the message has not been opened.

Re: body number tag

Hello Garry, It's my understanding that they all had: 1. Body Number tag pop riveted to the Rear Beaver Panel. 2. Car Number (VIN) riveted to the lower section of the Left Front Windscreen pillar. 3. Car Number (VIN) stamped into angled section of firewall below the heater box. 4. Car, Body, Engine...

Re: The end for the MOT for vehicles of historic interest

I couldn't find anything on this site that relates to what we were discussing - can you help me out? You flippantly said that this sounds like the sort of theoretical claptrap that only a university study could come up with. If you look at the link which describes the role of the organisation you w...

Re: The end for the MOT for vehicles of historic interest

This sounds like the sort of theoretical claptrap that only a university study could come up with. I think the answer more likely is that mechanical failures virtually never cause accidents. Well I disagree http://www.monash.edu/muarc/research/research-areas/transport-safety If, as you say mechanic...

Re: The end for the MOT for vehicles of historic interest

I am surprised that you lot are not jumping for joy at the thought of of not having to do MOTs. Where I live we did away with them many years ago and it was the best thing that happened. If you are worried about the safety of your vehicle then you can still get them checked over by someone competent...

Re: body number tag

The body number is on two silkscreen printed aluminium tags pop rivetted to the body. One is roughly behind where the rear licence plate is and its pop rivets should be visible on the vertical surface from inside the back of the boot. The other is at the bottom of the left hand winscreen pillar und...

Re: WANTED: S3 Km/h Speedo (swop for MPH?)

I bought a kph series 3 speedo at a autojumble in the UK in 1983 to go into my UK spec series 3. Put it in but the speedo and oddometer were reading completely different to real speed and distance. Obviously it was for something else but not sure what. It was SN - 6332/0825. So do your homework firs...

Maybe an exhaust like this V12 XJS has is what we want - sounds like a V12 should  If it works for a XJS will work on a E-Type.

Turn up the sound

Not looking good, neither car has been taxed for over 30 years. As a matter of interest Chris what resource do you use to determine this? See the following link - just type in the Rego Number https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax By the way if there are any previous owners of my car in the Avatar (A...

Yes - the Series 3 looks masculine where the 1 and 2 look girlie with their narrow track, skinny tyres and from the front or rear the body looks too big for the track.

Re: Kienzle Clock

The Kienzle is a mechanical clock that is wound up electrically, so as long as the voltage is enough to wind it up the actual voltage (within reason) should not matter - lower voltage means it will just take longer to wind up - normally only takes a second or two.

Re: Smith Clock reactivation

As far as I am aware there was no battery clock fitted to a series 3 as standard - my series 3 Kienzle clock is a mechanical clock that is wound electrically. Some later Series 3s have the Smiths version fitted which is a rectified clock operated by the car battery. So if you have a clock operated b...
