Re: Clutch slave cylinder

Tony : why don't you withdraw the piston and seals and see if the bore is in good condition - if it is , then why not use a rebuild kit ?

Re: Clutch Release bearing noise and rev drop

Ian : I am afraid that the rev drop is sinister , as it may be indicative of crankshaft thrust bearing failure You need to get an assistant to depress the pedal several times with the engine running while you watch the crankshaft pulley. If it can be seen to move forward with each depression, then t...

Re: “Dry” Engine Oil Capacity ?

One of the problems with the XK engine is that it can take at least 30 minutes from shutting the hot engine down for the sump to reach a true level and thus there is always a tendency for the hot level to be "under-read" . The capacity is so large by modern standards that in reality a small under or...

Re: Manifold nuts

That sounds the most likely explanation : in fairness, it is rather difficult with brass to know when you have got them tight enough - there is a rather fine line between correct torque and stripping them - generally speaking ( although others may disagree with me ) I think the best technique is to ...

I have just been sent this terrifying film https://www.facebook.com/james.vernon.319/posts/pfbid0hQb1bCTCc88j2i4NqJ9ZzeNz6bjz34ihwriDq7Vh3dNNT8cUsPTbkDq7Esj7Ga9pl Surely, sooner or later these incidents will be the end of the BEV craze ? Re: Coolant on my bolts

Your block from 1968 is likely to be a later long stud example. If your temperature reached 118C then the internal pressure will have been at a maximum that the cap will take and this will have forced water up the threads. Steve's suggestion of barr's is a good one - the factory always used 2 bottle...

Reassembly in S London area

I am posting this on behalf of someone living in S London area who has a V12 where all mechanical parts and the bodyshell have already been restored, but which now needs re-assembly, and the mechanic working on it so far has now had to give up. Can anyone make suggestions as to who might convenientl...

Very glad ( but unsurprised ) you got a first class job from Hutsons . Good luck with the assembly - mapping out the order of doing things before you start is time well spent

Re: Fault diagnosis- help needed please!

This is a fairly classic description of what happens with some aftermarket rotor arms which become conductive with heat. You mention having changed it : if it was not from the Distributor Doctor, then the first thing I would do is to swap it for a new DD one

Re: Carb Tuning (balancing/mixture)

I think, as Steve ( mgcg) has said, a check for an air leak on the rear carb/manifold and manifold to head is needed. A convenient way to do this is, with the engine idling, to play an unlit butane gun along the various joints : any variation in idle which this produces suggests a leak at that spot ...

Re: Carb Tuning (balancing/mixture)

You do not tell us whether this is a 3.8 or a 4.2, and there are significant differences between them because the 4.2 manifold has, relatively speaking, very large balance passages compared with the 3.8. Thus in a 4.2 altering either the flow or the mixture strength on any one carburetter has a not ...

Re: Diagnose Engine Rattle

The bearings are not oval : it is the crank journals which ( however strange it may sound ) were ground to an oval . This is dealt with ( IIRC) in Roger Bywater's extensive commentary on the development of the4.2 XK engines and the mark 10
