#1 First post: Thanks!

Post by alastair_james_cox » Thu Jul 20, 2017 8:13 pm

Good evening,

Firstly many thanks to the team for managing and sharing such an incredible resource. Between this forum and Chucks blog at Monocoque Metalworks I feel I can at least visualise the work that's ahead of me. It will be a while until I can start my restoration but there's probably quite a bit I can lean or share in the meantime. My car is a 1967 Series 1 and is listed here on XKE Data:

http://www.xkedata.com/cars/detail/?car=1E35445

There are also some great photos still up on the Beverly Hills Car Club website, although I bought the car after it had been exported to the UK:

https://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/196 ... c-1386.htm

Overall it's in very original and unrestored condition (an understatement). It has a replacement head but otherwise it's still in one piece (except the holes!).

I'll post a query about the covered headlights in the Series 1 forum and look forward to contributing when possible.

Best,

Al (Alastair Mulholland-Cox)

Welcome Al, looks like your first purchase will be a large tin of T-cut
Have you much experience of car restoration? When you're ready post your plan of action, it might give others a chance to make recommendations.
Have you got all the relevant manuals, not just the Haynes but the proper E Type 4.2 workshop manual. Also get a copy of SNG Barratts catalogue as they have excellent parts diagrams.

Good look

Welcome, Al

My car was the same (or very similar) colour as yours when it came back from USA. Must have been trendy at some point. It also had about 2 inches of filler in the drivers door skin.

Enjoy your journey.

Regards

Edit
Having actually looked at the pictures of your car, it appears to be primrose, which is nice. Mine was actually canary yellow, which was far from nice!

Hi Al,
:welcomewave: aboard.

My car also came from BHCC and turned out pretty well.
Looking at yours from the pics, clearly needs bodywork attention and some new panels, hope that you have plenty of patience and a good budget for the restoration as it can be very rewarding.
Have a good read of our restoration stories section as it has all be done before
Good luck planning the project & then getting stuck in !

Thanks all,

It's safe to assume little to no experience (on a sliding scale!) compared to most of the blogs on the forum but I've been around classic cars (my father had the bug) it's just I don't have enough time at present to really get stuck in. I've bought the Service Manual, Judging Guide and Factory Original E Type book. As a starting point I thought I'd do an audit and see what's no longer original or is missing ... just to get my head into gear!

Best, Al

Al, if you've little experience, then would it be wise to ask one of the knowledgable on the forum to help you assess what is needed to be done?

Let us know which part of the country you're in to see if there might be a volunteer.

Great advice and lot's of contacts who can support already but I'll share as I go along. It's actually worse than it looks. Sharp eyes will note a very large air vent in each footwell. Oh ... I'm in Cambridge but the car is in storage so not accessible at present.
