#1 S1 New Data Plates

Having read 'Heuer's' 2014 post about the superior quality of the Classic Jaguar (US) version of the Data Plate I obtained a quote. It was $25 for a blank plus $25 for engraving (Goes to charity) plus $99 for postage. The postage making this a somewhat expensive purchase I wondered if there might be other members who are in a similar position to me (needing a plate in the next few months) and would like to join with me in making a joint purchase and thereby share the cost of the postage?

Don't recall the postage being that expensive given the plate fits in an envelope! Give them a call and check if they have got that amount correct. It should be $9.99!

Alternative is to ask someone like Pete Crespin if you can have the plate sent to him in the US and get him to forward to you.

There is another option ETF make identical VIN plates to the original through Hutson, if you give Andy a ring he will tell you the cost for the complete plate stamped in the correct font.

Thank you David and Dave. Dan Mooney of Classic Jaguar has promised a firm quote for the postage (Internet price was incorrect). I will also speak to Andy at Hutson's. I will post the outcomes when known.

Hi Zebedee
In amongst the boxes and boxes of bits that I acquired with my S2 car, I have just found an unstamped data plate which you're more than welcome to. I found it after I'd had one stamped up by Classic Jaguar. I had it delivered to a hotel in the US and collected it myself, so I can't comment on the postage cost. The new plate looks very good, but I can't compare it to my original because it was completely rotted away. I wouldn't know if there is a difference between a S1 & S2 plate, but if you're interested in my unstamped plate, let me know and I'll send you a picture.

Andy - Thank you for your kind offer. I have tried without success to send you a photo of my tatty data plate. Perhaps you could send one to me, I clearly do not know how to upload to the system!
Regards. Clive.

Gfhug - zedebee & zedebee7 are both me! How this has happened I don't know! I only have one membership. I will need to investigate. Sorry for any confusion.

Series 1 Stu - I have not received a message to either of my nom de plumes!

That's funny, it's been sitting in my outbox since 20th October.

There's another PM also sitting there. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Zebedee
Hopefully, a picture of the data plate that I have will be attached. It has a removable plastic film on it which is why it appears slightly motley. As I said, I don't know if this is correct for a S1 car, but if you want it let me know and I'll send it to you.

I would be VERY interested to know if CJ, ETF or Hutson's provide a bas-relief photo-etched plate, which is the only version I would accept as a true replica. Smooth screen-printed plates are ten-a-penny, metaphorically-speaking. A true macro/close-up photo of the ones discussed in this thread would help, especially if shot from a 3/4 angle rather than perfect plan view.

The CJ ones are exact copies down to the TEX ACO name and photo etched as per the originals.

I will see if I can get a better photo tomorrow. There is a post on comission plates in the Factory Fit thread:

Pete,

The ETF one is a photo etched one, it is as they an exact replica of the original plate, I supplied my 1961 plate to Uryk and he has made it an exact match, he even had a set of stamps made as per the original font.
If you buy one and supply the info from the plate it will be stamped up, not sure if Uryk does it or Hutsons.

I was looking for a plate from an outside bonnet latch car they are apparently different again 500 because he wants to copy one of those as well.

So the lettering and silver lines are raised above the black areas and the plate is rough when you run a thumb over it? David's photo looks smooth around the rivet holes and at the bottom around the 'Retinax' wording, but going from photos is asking for trouble

For sake of completeness.
Classic Jaguar (Dan Mooney) US price is $54.13 including tax + estimated $30 for shipping to UK for stamped plate.
Hutsons UK (Andy) price is £54 including VAT + estimated £9.50 for postage within UK. for stamped plate.
Both plates are said to be photo etched.

Hi:

I was considering buying a new data plate for my own car, until I see how a good restoration can recover a damaged one: http://classicjaguar.com/cj/885013.html

Blimey, there's some impressively obsessive attention to detail on that blog!
