Ive only gone and bought one!
#1 Ive only gone and bought one!
So after 30 plus years of drooling over etypes and 10 plus years of telling my wife Im going to have one one day I am now the proud owner of a 68 S1.5 2+2 that needs a significant amount of TLC. I got the car moved to the North last week via a car moving franchise and I hired a van to move the new bonnet and garage full of spares. Unfortunately the amount of snow down south meant that I couldnt get the van anywhere near the bonnets location without getting stuck (again) so three of us carried it 200metres in the snow to the van....would have made a great picture. I am now sorting through the spares to figure out what I have and havent got. The car has sat in the dry for 34 years but still will need new floors sills etc all of which I have , I just need to figure out if Im going to tackle the rot slowly myself or pay the money to have an expert sort it. Looking forward to picking all of your brains on the numerous problems Im likely to encounter.

Phil, welcome to the forum. A great place for help and advice, and don't be frightened about asking what may seem silly questions. We've all been there and learned.
There are some very experienced restorers on here, you might be able to get one or two to visit and advise a course of action. Be careful about farming out work to make sure the people really do know about E Types, you can always ask on here if anyone knows of companies you're considering and get comments via PMs.
Good luck
Geoff

Hi Phil and welcome.
Whether you do it yourself or farm it out depends on your welding and metalworking skills; how long you want to wait before you can drive your car and how deep your pockets are.
There is a great deal of satisfaction in doing it yourself and you know exactly what has been done, but it is very time consuming.
You really need to put the shell on a rotisserie to do it properly and this requires striping it out completely.
It can also depend on whether you are just doing what is needed to get it on the road or a full rebuild.
There are a lot of knowledgeable and helpful people here who will do their best to answer any questions that you may have.

I'm sure Martin Robey shares will be on the rise once I've made a list of missing bits.... Bonnet hinges and balance links first I think so I can get my new bonnet safely on the car and off the ground and out of mother in laws temporary storage facility

Hello Phil,
Looks like a great project. I’m also a new owner of a ‘68 S1/2 2+2 but I’ve not been quite as brave as you! If I can help with any pics of incomplete areas just shout. Best of luck!
Paul.

OK so after 3 months I finally have a V5 in my name (presumably the previous owner didnt send the old V5 off to DVLA) but it says number of seats 2.
What does anyone elses 2+2 logbook say?

Hi and welcome . So what plans have you for the rebuild ? Totally standard . Or some of the usual upgrades like 4 pot brakes . Better cooling. 5 speed gear box etc etc or is it still to early . Feel free to ask advice you need , this is a very good forum with a club like feel

Hi Darren, Im going to try and keep it as original as possible whilst making it as nice to drive as possible. I wont change the gearbox for a 5 speed but cooling and brakes might well see some enhancements. The new bonnet that came with the car is a closed headlight version so that takes care of that decision. Im in the process of making some space in my garage at home so I get it home and start inspecting it properly prior to taking it all apart.
