Paul, if you have no experience of E Types then the last place to buy is ebay. Too many people get ripped off there.
If you are serious about buying an E Type, why not introduce yourself properly and tell us what you are looking for. There are some VERY experience people on here, who have owned and restored E Types over many years.
To expect someone to give you the nod on a fleabay car at short notice is rather naive
Geoff

Hi Geoff
I fully agree that it was a crazy idea, but could have been a bargain, anyway it didnt sell.
the reason for my very short notice question was that there was virtually no time.
I am very interested in an E type and have been for a long time but the price ranges are rather bewildering, it must be an open top 2 seater, preferably a 3.8 or 4.2, it doesnt need to be immaculate butwould prefer that the engine and body work were sound, any advise on where to start?
Thanks

If you are looking for 3.8 or 4.2 ots in good but maybe not concourse condition then probably your best bet is one of the several classic car vendors that advertise in both the e type magazine, the several classic car magazines or on-line if you want security and come back for what will be a substantial purchase. Alternatively keep an eye on the several classic car auction houses as they have a steady stream of cars ranging from basket cases to fresh restorations. What ever you decide do your homework first. Like all old cars, e types rust. Rust is never good but some rust is cosmetic and some rust is serious. Rust can be obscured for a quick sale..See several cars. Leave the rose tinted specs st home. If possible take someone along who knows e types and can spot a good one and can identify mutton dressed as lamb. There are plenty of genuine honest cars out there but there are also traps for the unwary.
E bay is the wild west. There are sometimes promising cars on there but there are plenty that are not and there are also plenty of scam adverts for cars that don't exist. Unless you have seen the car and seen all the paperwork they don't touch...good luck and keep us posted...

...and this would be my recommendation for your second book purchase.
E-type Jaguar DIY Restoration & Maintenance: A Kind of Loving
by Chris Rooke
If you read this and it inspires and excites then you are right for an E Type. If it terrifies then maybe not.
Good luck in your search!

Good advice about books, but nothing beats talking to a knowledgeable owner. Contact a forum member near you and arrange a meet up would be a good idea - most people would be happy to help.

Sage words from Malcolm....there is nothing like talking to some who has an e type...even better someone who does at least some of the endless list jobs that come with owning a 50+ year old car on their own e type

Well put, Steve. Not everyone selling on eBay are scoundrels.
However, the question remains. Why didn't you advertise your car on this forum? You would reach an informed and largely appreciative audience that would help sell it by spreading the word and guiding people, just like they have done here.

In hindsight it might have also been advisable to place it here on the forum but I advertised it on ebay purely because ebay has a much wider audience.

Sorry Steve, but if your car was just like an NFC Car for half the price, the punters should be queuing halfway down the road! There is a very good reason why a professionally restored car from the bare metal and a complete mechanical restoration costs well over £200,000. If yours ticks those boxes, then Paul needs to get round to yours a bit quick and get it bought!

Barry. My car had some work carried out by NFC before I bought it and they were very impressed indeed with the car. Also the company that did the extra work for me on my e type, just down the road from them, have an ex NFC guy working for them now and he actually said that a lot of aspects about my car are on a par with a NFC e-type especially the bodywork and paint job so he should know. I am not saying that mine is worth as much as the ones they have for sale but it is certainly a very nice car indeed. I also do not have the extortionate overheads that they have operating out of Beaulieu in the New Forest which obviously inflates the prices of their e types somewhat.Barry wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2018 7:19 pmSorry Steve, but if your car was just like an NFC Car for half the price, the punters should be queuing halfway down the road!
